Shubman Gill became 14th Indian cricketer to captain the side in T20Is.
The Shubman Gill-led Indian cricket team outclassed the hosts Zimbabwe 4-1 in the five-match T20I series. The exciting series saw some young talents fighting hard to earn permanent place in the Indian squad in the shortest format.
Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja announced their T20I retirements after lifting the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in June, whereas the BCCI rested some senior players for the Zimbabwe T20I series, which gave youngsters a chance to show their skills.
Abhishek Sharma hammered his maiden ton in the second T20I, whereas skipper Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shivam Dube and Sanju Samson also made crucial contributions with the bat. In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan, Khaleel Ahmed and Washington Sundar (Player of the Series) impressed everyone.
Captaincy brings the best out of me: Shubman Gill, after winning debut T20I series as a skipper
With Rohit Sharma announcing his T20I retirement, the BCCI selectors will look to find next captain for India’s T20I side. Many reports have suggested that all-rounder Hardik Pandya might takeover as full-time captain of the T20I side.
However, with Shubman Gill leading the young side fluently and winning the Zimbabwe T20I series, BCCI will keep that in mind, going forward. After winning the five-match T20I series 4-1, Gill expressed that captaincy brings the best out of him as it helps him to be involved more in the game.
“It (captaincy) is something that I definitely enjoy. I think it brings out the best in me when I am out there because I look to be involved in the game. It is something that really brings out the side of me which I enjoy being on the field,” Gill said.
“There was pressure, I wouldn’t say extra pressure but obviously even when you are playing just as a batsman when you don’t perform there is a certain kind of pressure that comes along with it. But I think that’s the fun part of it. You kind of feel so many different emotions. Pressure is one of them. And when you get out of that, the satisfaction that you feel is immense,” Gill added.
Really enjoyed playing under Rohit Sharma: Gill
Shubman also said that he has taken inspiration from former T20I captains Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. Gill added that he really enjoyed playing under former T20I skipper Rohit.
“You can take qualities from Rohit bhai or even Mahi bhai, Virat bhai, Hardik bhai, all of them,” he said. “All of them have great qualities. I have played the most under Rohit bhai, so he is someone who I look up to and really enjoy playing under,” Shubman Gill said.
