KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal stitched together a match-winning performance for India.
India’s victory over Sri Lanka (SL vs IND) in the 1st Test at Galle produced several individual milestones; however, the highlight of the match remained a crucial batting partnership between Indian opener KL Rahul and youngster Devdutt Padikkal.
Although the Indian batsmen delivered a magnificent performance overall, Rahul and Padikkal were at the heart of India’s dominant display, showcasing excellent coordination across both innings. Thanks to their brilliant performance in the match, India secured a massive victory by 165 runs.
Rahul and Padikkal first came together in the first innings after Yashasvi Jaiswal’s unfortunate dismissal. The pair immediately settled the innings and produced a record-breaking second-wicket partnership. By the end of Day 1, the two batters had added more than 150 runs for the second wicket.
Brought into the XI in place of injured Sai Sudharsan, Padikkal grasped the opportunity and continued his impressive innings, eventually scoring a magnificent 167. Alongside Padikkal’s maiden century, Rahul contributed 82 runs, adding stability as a senior batter.
After a magnificent partnership in the first innings, their contribution became even more crucial as Rahul and Padikkal replicated their success in India’s second innings as well.
The two Karnataka batters put together another half-century partnership, becoming only the fifth Indian batting pair to achieve such a record in Sri Lanka.
This was the first time that two Indian batters had managed the record feat in Sri Lanka since 2008. With their performance, the two batters have set a new benchmark for stability in India’s batting order. Padikkal alone finished with a record total of 211 runs and won the Player of the Match award.

This added to Padikkal’s joy, as he had already received his first-ever Player of the Match award after scoring 211 runs across the two innings in the Galle Test.
