South Africa women will play three T20Is against Pakistan in September to prepare for the ICC event.
Laura Wolvaardt will captain South Africa in the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, which will be played in the UAE from October 3. This will be her first time captaining South Africa in an ICC event.
Sune Luus, who led the team to the T20 World Cup final last year on home soil, is an important member of the squad. She is joined by experienced players such as Marizanne Kapp, Chloe Tryon, Nadine De Klerk, Tazmin Brits, Ayabonga Khaka, and Nonkululeko Mlaba.
Nadine de Klerk, who is currently recuperating from an Achilles’ injury, is likely to be fully fit for the tournament.
The same South African squad will take on Pakistan in a series of three T20Is in preparation for the main event, from 16 – 20 September.
“While playing in the UAE presents some unknowns, we have conducted thorough research and selected a balanced squad that complements the conditions, with strategic options in mind as we head into the T20 World Cup.
Laura (Wolvaardt) has been exceptional as a leader, bringing a holistic approach to the team. She leads with respect and integrity, and we are excited to see her leadership and playing qualities shine at the World Cup,” CSA Proteeas Women Convenor of Selectors, Clinton du Preez said.
Uncapped duo of Seshnie Naidu and Ayanda Hlubi included in South Africa squad for ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024
The Proteas have mostly retained their squad from the previous year, with the inclusion of four new players: Eliz-Mari Marx, Tumi Sekhukhune, Mieke De Ridder, and uncapped Seshnie Naidu. In addition, they have picked Miané Smit, a 19-year-old batting all-rounder, as a traveling reserve.
‘Seshnie Naidu has shown significant growth as a bowler within our camps, and we see her as an X-factor for the World Cup. She brings a unique element to our bowling attack, offering something different that could be pivotal,” Du Preez added.
South Africa will compete in Group B of the 2024 tournament, alongside Bangladesh, England, Scotland, and the West Indies.
Their campaign will begin on the second day of the competition, against the West Indies on October 4, followed by matches against England (7 October), Scotland (9 October), and Bangladesh (12 October).
