South Africa will tour West Indies for two tests and three T20Is in August, 2024.
On Monday, 8th July, Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced 16-member squad for the upcoming two-match test series against the West Indies starting from August 7. Veteran batter Temba Bavuma will lead the South African cricket team.
Star batter Matthew Breetzke has earned his maiden test call-up for the Proteas. Interestingly, Breetzke captained the South Africa A team during their tour of India in December 2023.
The CSA has also named wicket-keeper Ryan Rickelton, who has made his return to the side for the first time since March 2023. Rickelton missed South Africa’s last two test series against India and New Zealand. The batter has played four test matches till now.
In the batting department, skipper Bavuma will be supported by David Bedingham, Aiden Markram, and Tristan Stubbs. In the fast bowling department, the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Gerald Coetzee, Nandre Burger, and Lungi Ngidi have been included in the 16-member squad.
Surprisingly, the CSA has rested star all-rounder Marco Jansen and excluded their ace speedster Anrich Nortje for the upcoming two-match test series against the West Indies.
“The decision to rest Marco Jansen was taken to allow for a conditioning period aimed at ensuring optimal physical and mental well-being given the season-long workloads,” Test coach Shukri Conrad said in a statement.
Temba Bavuma, Matthew Breetzke, Tony de Zorzi, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Dane Paterson, Tristan Stubbs, and Kyle Verreynne will attend a red-ball camp from July 15–19 in Durban before linking up with the whole squad in Trindad and Tobago on July 27.
The visitors will also play a four-day warm-up fixture against the West Indies Invitational XI at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy ahead of the first test on August 7.
