Kavya Maran was actively involved during the meeting between BCCI and the IPL franchise owners on July 31.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) owner Kavya Maran has asked for at least six-seven retentions and Right To Match (RTM) cards for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction.

The BCCI held a meeting with all 10 IPL franchise owners on July 31 at their headquarters at the Wankhede Stadium. Maran was heavily involved in the discussions as she gave her opinions and suggestions on several matters regarding the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Maran was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz, “We can use it as four retentions and two RTMS, or all six retentions, or all six RTMS and so on. The choice on whether a retention or RTM is used should be with the franchise based on discussions with the player.”

Kavya Maran wants no limit on the retention of overseas players

The SRH owner also asked the BCCI to remove the limit on the number of overseas players a franchise can retain. This was not surprising since SRH boasts plenty of overseas match-winners – Pat Cummins, Travis Head, Glenn Phillips and Heinrich Klaasen to name a few.

In the IPL 2022 mega auction, the BCCI allowed a maximum of two overseas players to be retained.

Maran explained her view, “Each team is built differently and the core strengths of various squads are different. Some have strong overseas players, some have strong capped Indian players, and some strong uncapped players. In our case, we have a strong core of overseas players. The number of capped/uncapped/overseas players retained should be at the discretion of the franchise and not restricted. For example, we can retain four overseas and two capped Indians or three overseas and three uncapped Indians and so on.”

Maran also recommended banning the players who pull out ahead of the start of the tournament after being picked up in the auction for reasons other than injury. SRH were reportedly unhappy with Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga withdrawing from the IPL 2024 season after being bought for INR 1.5 crore.
