15-year-old Shashini Gimhani has been picked in the Sri Lanka squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.
Wrist-spinner Shashini Gimhani, who is yet to celebrate her 16th birthday, has been named in the Sri Lanka squad for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.
The Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee on Friday, 20th September, named a 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC event. Chamari Athapatthu, who captained Sri Lanka to the Women’s Asia Cup 2024 crown, will continue to lead them.
The tournament that was initially slated to be hosted in Bangladesh, will be played in the UAE from October 3rd. Sharjah and Dubai will be hosting this year’s Women’s T20 World Cup after the ICC moved it out of Bangladesh due to the government of multiple participating nations issuing travel advisors against Bangladesh owing to the civil and political unrest in the country.
The Sri Lanka squad includes regular faces like Harshitha Samarawickrama, Kavisha Dilhari, Anushka Sanjeewani, Inoka Ranaweera, Ama Kanchana and Sugandika Kumari.
One interesting selection is that of the 15-year-old left-arm wrist-spinner Shashini Gimhani, who has played only five T20Is so far, in which she’s picked up six wickets. She has attained an impressive average of 13.83 and an economy of 5.53 in her brief WT20I career.
Sri Lanka have named Kaushini Nuthyangana as a travelling reserve. Their squad, which was approved by the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, will depart for the UAE on September 23.
Sri Lanka are placed in Group A with India, Australia, New Zealand, and Pakistan. The top two teams will proceed to the semi-finals.
