Steve Smith has an average of 28.50 as an opener in test cricket.
Veteran Australian cricket team batter Steve Smith is not worried about his lack of success as an opener.
Following David Warner’s test retirement in January this year, Smith, who had been highly successful at number four, requested to replace Warner at the top.
However, the 35-year-old wasn’t able to translate his success from number four to the opening slot. The right-handed batter has played four matches and eight innings at the top and scored only 171 runs till now at an average of 28.50. The senior batter has managed only one fifty in his new role.
However, his fighting knock of 91 not out against the West Indies in Brisbane was a high-quality innings and showed his potential as an opener.
I’m not fussed either way: Steve Smith
Recently, Steve Smith expressed his thoughts about the lack of runs while opening in the longest format. The veteran said that he isn’t worried about it yet.
“You’ll have to ask the men in charge but I’m not fussed either way. Some challenging conditions with the new ball, in particular. So I would have liked to score a few more runs,” Smith told Code Sports.
“That’s the game sometimes but I played pretty well in the second innings at the Gabba where we couldn’t get over the line, unfortunately. It’s just a position to me so it doesn’t really faze me too much,” Smith added.
Was disappointed not to be in the T20 World Cup squad: Smith
The 35-year-old further revealed that he was disappointed when he was not picked for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
“I don’t know about international T20 stuff. You’ll have to ask the selectors there. I was disappointed not to be in the World Cup but that’s the way things go. They wanted all the big hitters.” Smith said.
Smith, though, did exceedingly well in his recent stint at the Major League Cricket 2024 in the USA, where he was the leading run-scorer for his side Washington Freedom. Smith amassed 336 runs at an average of 56. The 35-year-old captained the Washington Freedom to the title.
