Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri praises Suryakumar Yadav for his "great catch" of David Miller

Sunil Chhetri played his last international game against Kuwait on June 6, 2024.

Legendary Indian footballer Sunil Chhetri has showered special praise on Indian cricketer Suryakumar Yadav for taking a tough catch of David Miller in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final that helped India beat South Africa by seven runs in Barbados to clinch the title.

Batting first, Virat Kohli raised a crucial half-century which helped India post 176/7. In reply, South Africa’s hard-hitter Heinrich Klaasen blasted 52 runs in 27 balls, which helped the Proteas into the commanding position of needing 30 runs in 30 balls.

But, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh pulled things back for India. Pandya was left to defend 16 runs in six balls with David Miller on strike. Off the first delivery, Hardik bowled a full toss outside the off-stump that Miller slammed towards long-off, where Suryakumar was fielding.

Suryakumar held his nerve to pluck the ball inside the boundary rope and lob it before stepping over the boundary line. He got back into the playing field to complete the catch, which helped India send the dangerous Miller back to the dressing room.

In the end, the Men in Blue won the thrilling final by seven runs and became the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 champions. With this victory, India ended their 11-year-old ICC trophy drought and also won a T20 world title after 17 years.

Sunil Chhetri gives special shoutout to Suryakumar

Legendary footballer and former Indian skipper Sunil Chhetri congratulated the Rohit Sharma-led side for their T20 World Cup 2024 triumph.

On a show on Sony Sports Network during the ongoing Euro 2024, Chhetri said that he was watching the IND vs SA match at home and was proud of the Rohit-led side.

“I was watching at home and I was very proud. I was so happy for the team,” Chhetri said.

Chhetri then pointed out to legendary footballer Bhaichung Bhutia, who sitting beside him said “I bet you he didn’t see the game.” Bhaichung replied, “He was looking after his son. I don’t think he watched as well.”

Chhetri acknowledged Suryakumar for his great catch. “It means so much for them, for the whole country. Special shoutout to Suryakumar Yadav. Great catch. Well done boy.”

Chhetri retired from international football last month.
