Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar lavished praise on KL Rahul following his ton in first test.

KL Rahul carved his name into Indian cricket history with a stunning century on day 2 of the first test against South Africa in Centurion. Former Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar, who has witnessed numerous iconic innings over the past five decades, hailed Rahul’s century as one of the top ten test centuries by an Indian batsman.

Gavaskar expressed his admiration for Rahul’s knock and highlighted the challenging conditions at SuperSport Park, asserting that the unpredictable pitch made scoring a century a formidable task. Despite facing constant threats from South African bowlers and losing partners along the way, Rahul’s innings stood out for him.

Sunil Gavaskar opens up on KL Rahul’s innings

Gavaskar emphasised the uniqueness of Rahul’s century on a challenging pitch of SuperSport Park. “I have been watching cricket since 50 years, I can surely say this hundred by Rahul is in the top ten in the Indian history of Tests. Because this is a different kind of pitch,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

The former opener commended Rahul’s ability to play such a remarkable innings under pressure, especially when he found himself partnered with tail-enders like Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna. Gavaskar praised Rahul’s exceptional shot-making skills, particularly the shot that took him to the century, describing it as something usually seen in T20 cricket.

Rahul’s unbeaten 101 runs were instrumental in propelling India to a respectable first-innings total of 245. Gavaskar drew parallels between Rahul’s achievement and Dilip Vengsarkar’s legendary centuries at Lord’s, naming Rahul as the ‘Centurion of Centurion’ after becoming the first visiting batter to score two test hundreds at the venue.

“Dilip Vengsarkar had scored three consecutive hundreds at Lord’s and was out on 52 the fourth time. That is why he was called the ‘Lord of Lord’s.’ Similarly, we can say that KL Rahul is the ‘Centurion of Centurion,” said Gavaskar.

The second day of the test match had early stumps due to rain. India posted a total of 245 in their first innings with KL Rahul’s remarkable century (101) standing out. South Africa responded strongly, finishing day two at 256/5 in the end of 66 overs with a lead of 11 runs.
