Sunil Gavaskar said he was privileged to play with Anshuman Gaekwad.

On July 31, former Indian cricketer and head coach Anshuman Gaekwad passed away at the Bhailal Amin General Hospital in Vadodara at the age of 71 after a long battle with blood cancer.

Earlier this month, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) provided INR 1 crore to support Gaekwad, who was then undergoing treatment at King’s College Hospital in London.

After that, the former Indian batter was then shifted to India, where further treatments continued in Vadodara.

Legendary Sunil Gavaskar pays tribute to Gaekwad

Gaekwad made his international debut in December 1974 against the West Indies. The former cricketer went on to play 40 tests for the national side. The right-handed batter amassed 1985 runs at an average of 30.07, including two centuries and 10 half-centuries.

Legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar, who played alongside Gaekwad, paid tribute to the departed former batter. Gavaskar hailed Anshuman as one of the three bravest cricketers in Indian cricket, along with Eknath Solkar and Jimmy Amarnath.

“I was privileged to play with three of the bravest cricketers in Indian cricket — Eknath Solkar, Jimmy Amarnath and Anshuman Gaekwad. We had heard about the bravery and guts of Nari Contractor playing with a broken rib and going on to score 81 at Lords,” Gavaskar said.“That was inspirational to budding cricketers that when it comes to playing for your country you must take all the blows and keep fighting for your team. That’s exactly what Ekki, Jimmy and Charlie as Anshuman was known, did when they donned the India cap. (It’s) very depressing news but Charlie showed here again that he wasn’t going to give his life’s wicket easily and fought right till the end. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Gavaskar added.
