Can Suryakumar Yadav make comeback in Indian T20I team?

Suryakumar Yadav was snubbed from captaincy following India’s T20 World Cup triumph.

The Indian Cricket Team entered another phase of transition in the T20Is following the T20 World Cup 2026 triumph. The Men in Blue became the first team to win consecutive World Cup titles in the shortest format, and hence the selectors are now looking towards the next World Cup cycle. 

As a result of this, a few omissions attracted much more attention, like the former Indian captain, Suryakumar Yadav. He was not only removed from captaincy following the T20 World Cup final but was also left out of the Indian squad. 

After he missed out on India selections for Ireland, England, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and the Asian Games as well, it was evident that the T20I veteran was no longer in India’s scheme of things. These have raised major questions on whether he could force his way back. 

Suryakumar Yadav’s T20I numbers for India

Suryakumar was undoubtedly one of the most productive T20I batters since his debut for India in 2021. He has played in 113 T20I matches and scored 3272 runs at an average of 36.35. He produced four centuries and 25 half-centuries during a five-year career. 

However, his form had seriously declined before the Indian selectors finally decided to drop him from the Indian team. From November 2024 through the end of 2025, he managed only 227 runs for India in more than 20 T20I innings. During this phase his average was around 13.35, and his strike rate dipped to as low as 120.10. 

Just before the T20 World Cup, he showed a glimpse of promising form in the New Zealand home series. He even made a promising start to the World Cup campaign with 84 against the USA in the first game, but his overall contribution remained far below his extraordinary standards. 

The IPL 2026 season also did not add much to his case, as he managed to score just 270 runs from 13 matches in the season with an average of 20.70. This was his worst season by average since debut for the Mumbai Indians in 2018. 

Is Suryakumar Yadav likely to make a comeback? 

The door is not closed for the Indian T20I veteran. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar once claimed that he was dropped due to recent form and stressed the fact that India are looking for the next two-year cycle. While form can be revived, the age factor remains a concern for Suryakumar. 

He remains the third highest run-getter for India in T20Is and one of the most dignified T20I batters with the unique possession of a 360-degree game. Hence, a strong domestic season or a promising IPL campaign followed by consistent performances might bring him right back in contention for a Team India spot. 

However, the biggest challenge for the former Indian captain will be the competition within the Indian team. With Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma and current skipper Shreyas Iyer putting on a more consistent show, India are filled with too many emerging options in the middle order, leaving very little room for any other players. 

Ultimately, it can be said that Surykumar is not likely to return anytime soon, as his comeback will depend less on his reputation and more on his domestic performances.
