India's tour of South Africa 2024
'Really enjoyed captaincy,' Suryakumar Yadav opens up on leading Indian cricket team

Suryakumar Yadav in his first assignment as India captain defeated Australia 4-1 in a 5-match T20I series.
Indian team management made a huge shift in their T20I strategy after all-rounder Hardik Pandya’s injury. Rising T20I star Suryakumar Yadav was given the opportunity to lead Indian side against Australia in the recently concluded 5-match T20I series. India won the series 4-1 against Australia and youngsters under a new skipper played exceptionally well. He was once again trusted and given the leadership for the ongoing 3-match T20I series against South Africa.
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has not played a single T20I game after the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final loss against England in Adelaide. Hardik Pandya’s ankle injury has left Indian team management in a mix as the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is just a few months away from now and India will be left with just 3 international games before the mega T20I event. Suryakumar Yadav has a positive mindset and with his leadership skills.
‘Really enjoyed the captaincy’
Suryakumar Yadav has revealed in a press conference that he is currently enjoying the ‘Big Responsibility’. Surya said, “From a personal point of view, it (captaincy) is a big responsibility. I really enjoyed it in the last series (against Australia). I would love to do the same (winning) in the coming series in South Africa, From the larger perspective, I feel we’ll see what comes ahead but for now let’s focus on the series.”
Suryakumar Yadav has been a prolific run-scorer for team India in T20I format and he raced towards the top-5 leading run-scorer in T20I cricket. Surya has been a consistent performer in T20I cricket and has scored 1985 runs in 55 T20I innings. Surya has smashed 3 centuries and 16 half-centuries. He is currently leading the race for Indian T20I skipper spot. ICC World T20 is just 6 months away from now and will be played in June 2024.
Right-hand batter Suryakumar Yadav is the 6th option as captain of Indian T20I side after their debacle in the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-finals against England played at Adelaide Oval. Jasprit Bumrah led the side in the 3-match T20I series against Ireland. KL Rahul had led the side in one T20I, and Rishabh Pant led the side in 5 T20I games. All-rounder Hardik Pandya captained India in 16 T20I games and Ruturaj Gaikwad brought India a glorious Gold Medal in Asian Games 2023.
