T Dilip retained, Abhishek Nayar and Ryan Ten Doeschate to join Gautam Gambhir for SL tour - reports
India’s tour of Sri Lanka 2024 will be Gautam Gambhir’s first assignment as India’s head coach.
Gautam Gambhir will be taking over the responsibility of Indian Cricket Team’s head coach from the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, where India will play three ODIs and three T20Is. This tour will start on July 27. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to confirm appointment of other coaching staff, but as per a new report in Cricbuzz, former Indian cricketer Abhishek Nayar and former Dutch all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate are set to join the team for Sri Lanka tour.
As per the report, these two former cricketers will join the team for the Sri Lanka tour as coaching staff. Meanwhile, T. Dilip, who was working as fielding coach and was a key member of Rahul Dravid’s coaching staff, has been retained. Alongside his coaching ability, he is also known for maintaining a positive environment in the team’s dressing room.
Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate to join Gautam Gambhir as coaching staff for Sri Lanka tour- Reports
The Cricbuzz report confirmed that the BCCI has appointed both Nayar and Ten Doeschate for the roles of assistant coaches of the senior men’s Indian Cricket Team. It leaves only one place to fill, which is for the bowling coach. On Gambhir’s request, the BCCI might consider former South African pacer Morne Morkel for this position. Notably, Nayar, Morkel, and Ten Doeschate have already worked with Gambhir in the IPL.
Both Ten Doeschate and Nayar are currently involved with the coaching setup of Kolkata Knight Riders and were with Gambhir when KKR lifted the IPL 2024 title. On the other hand, Morkel was with Gambhir when he was part of Lucknow Super Giants for two seasons. India are set to travel to Sri Lanka on Monday, and Dilip and Nayar will also travel with the team.
However, there is no confirmation when Ten Doeschate will join the team, as he is currently involved in the ongoing Major League Cricket (MLC) 2024 in coaching KKR’s sister franchise LA Knight Riders. He might join the Indian cricket team directly in Colombo.
However, there is no confirmation about Morkel yet. The BCCI has arranged a media conference on July 22 where they will officially announce Gambhir formally as the new head coach and Suryakumar Yadav as the new T20I captain. The BCCI secretary, Jay Shah, is currently in Colombo for the ICC Annual Conference, and he will meet the team there.
