Three teams who surprised everyone by qualifying for Super 8 round at ICC T20 World Cup 2024

12 out of 20 teams eliminated from the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, while the rest proceeded to the Super 8 round.

After 40 group-stage matches played across the USA and West Indies, the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 will move into its next stage: the Super 8 round. This round, followed by the semi-finals and final will all be played in the Caribbean Islands only.

The group stage of the T20 World Cup 2024 was thoroughly entertaining because of the challenging nature of the pitches for the batters. The bowling-friendly surfaces in most venues allowed even the teams that were weak on paper to compete with the higher-ranked sides and give them a tough fight.

There were a number of close contests and there were even a couple of Super Overs in the group round. There were a few upsets – such as the USA beating Pakistan – and a few potential upsets – when the Netherlands had South Africa on the ropes. Three teams have surprised many by advancing to the Super 8 round over another high-profile team in their group.

Three teams who surprised everyone by qualifying for Super Eight round in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024:

1. United States of America

Monank Patel-led USA are definitely the most unexpected entrant in the Super 8 round at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Being grouped with India and Pakistan in Group A, barely anyone would have expected the USA to reach the next stage of the tournament. But their victory in the Super Over over Babar Azam’s side and a washout against Ireland ensured that they proceeded to the next round.

2. Bangladesh

The Najmul Hossain Shanto-led side have taken giant strides in the ongoing tournament by qualifying for the next round ahead of Sri Lanka. Bangladesh defeated Sri Lanka in a close encounter by two wickets. Even though they lost to South Africa, Bangladesh’s wins over the Netherlands and Nepal ensured them qualifying for the Super 8 stage.

3. Afghanistan

Filled with a number of T20 specialists, Afghanistan have been a team on the rise in recent years in T20Is. The vindication of this rise came in this tournament when they defeated New Zealand.

They produced their best performances in their first three matches of the group stage. Winning matches by 125 runs against Uganda, by 84 runs against New Zealand and by 7 wickets against Papua New Guinea to confirm their Super 8 spot over the Kiwis.
