Australia are the most successful team in the ICC Cricket World Cup history.

The ICC Cricket World Cup is the biggest tournament that happens in the game of cricket. It is played once every four years, and the first edition took place in 1975 in England. Since then, there have been a number of editions, and the best teams in the world have taken part in this tournament.

West Indies won the first two editions, but since then, Australia have dominated the tournament. They are the most successful teams in history when it comes to the ICC Cricket World Cup. A total of six teams have had the glory to lift the title, and we will talk about the teams with the most ICC Cricket World Cup trophies below.

Here are the list of Teams with the most ICC Cricket World Cup trophies

Pakistan became only the second Asian team to lift the trophy. They did it in 1992, under the captaincy of Imran Khan, in the tournament held in Australia and New Zealand. Nine teams took part in that tournament, and Pakistan won it by beating England in the final by 22 runs and winning their maiden title.

5. Sri Lanka – 1:

After Pakistan, it was Sri Lanka that won the ICC Cricket World Cup 1996, played in the Sub-continent region. For the first time, more than ten teams (12) took part in a single edition. Sri Lanka won it by beating Australia in the final by 7 wickets, chasing 241 runs to win. That win came under the leadership of Arjuna Ranatunga.

4. England – 1:

After getting knocked out of the group stage of the 2015 World Cup, Eoin Morgan took charge and changed the mindset, which resulted in the maiden World Cup win for the nation that introduced this game. Under Morgan, England lifted the title in 2019 at home, beating New Zealand in a controversial final at the Lord’s. They won the final by using the boundary count method after a tie in the superover.

3. West Indies – 2:

Well, West Indies in the 1970s and late 1980s were the strongest team of that era. From batting icons to fierce bowlers, they had everything. That is when they ended the first two editions in 1975 and 1979 undefeated, lifting the first two titles. Both wins came under the leadership of Clive Lloyd, and West Indies were the first team to win multiple titles. They were on their way to win third in a row, but they lost the final of the 1983 to India.

2. India – 2:

Team India have also had a fair amount of success in the ICC Cricket World Cup history. They have won the second-most matches in the tournament’s history and enter every edition as one of the favorites. India were only the second team to win the prestigious title in 1983, when they ended West Indies’ streak and beat them in the final at the Lord’s under Kapil Dev’s captaincy to become only the second team to win the World Cup.

Then, in 2011, India repeated that success under MS Dhoni’s leadership and took India to glory at home, beating Sri Lanka in the final at Wankhede Stadium. Notably, India became the first team to win the ICC Cricket World Cup as hosts.

Australia have always been the team to beat in any edition of the World Cup. Though they won their first title in 1987 under Allan Border, that was just the start of a formidable force. Since then, they have added four more titles to their kitty. Australia won their second title in 1999 under the captaincy Steve Waugh, beating Pakistan in the final. Then, Ricky Ponting led the team to win the 2003 and 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup tournaments, beating India and Sri Lanka in the finals, respectively. In 2015, Australia won their fifth title at home under Michael Clarke’s captaincy, beating New Zealand in the final by 7 wickets. Pat Cummins led side has lifted the World Cup trophy for the sixth time. They beat India in ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in Ahmedabad.
