The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 saw inspirational captaincy by a few skippers.

The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 came to a conclusion on June 29 with India defeating South Africa in the final in Barbados. Both teams were unbeaten heading into the final, and both teams were looking to end their ICC trophy drought: South Africa had never won an ICC World Cup trophy in any format, while India had not grabbed an ICC silverware since 2013.

It was India whose unbeaten streak in this tournament remained intact and the South African hearts were broken as they failed to clinch their first-ever World Cup title.

Some captains have proved their worth in gold, while some were disappointing as leaders and performers. In this article, we will discuss the top three skippers of this tournament.

Ranking the top 3 best captains of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024:

1. Rohit Sharma

Regardless of the result in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final, Rohit Sharma had already been outstanding as India’s captain, as he was in last year’s home World Cup. This time, though, a World Cup trophy was added to his legacy as India’s skipper.

Rohit has led from the front with the bat, scoring 257 runs with the help of three half-centuries. The word selfless in Indian cricket is now synonymous with Rohit, who batted at a strike rate of 156.

Even on tough pitches, he has shown an aggressive approach in the powerplay and not holding himself back. His batting approach has epitomized India’s newly-adopted brand of cricket.

He’s been sensational as a captain on the field, the best of which was shown when India defended 119 against Pakistan.

Under Rohit, India topped both the group stage points table and the Super 8 points table while not losing a single game. They defeated defending champions England in the semi-final on a difficult pitch, on which Rohit smashed a terrific half-century. His bowling changes in the final were spot on when South Africa failed to score 30 runs in 30 balls.

2. Aiden Markram

Markram was the one who led South Africa to a title triumph in the 2014 Under-19 World Cup. He is the one who has led South Africa to their first-ever men’s ICC World Cup final in any format. But the Proteas fell short by seven runs in the final.

Even though Markram couldn’t do much with the bat, he was terrific as a captain with his tactical nous during field maneuvering and bowling changes. Hailed as perennial “chokers,” South Africa have clinched several tight games in this tournament on their way to the final, with Markram making the correct decisions on the field.

They had won seven games in a row but failed at the last hurdle. Regardless of the result in the final, Markram has etched himself in the hearts of the South Africans with his admirable leadership.

3. Rashid Khan

One of the biggest T20 match-winners in the world, Rashid Khan proved his caliber as captain in this tournament by taking Afghanistan to their first-ever semi-final of a major ICC tournament. This run included victories over New Zealand, Australia and Bangladesh.

Rashid was, as expected, impressive with the ball as well: 14 wickets at an economy of 6.78. Khan emerged as a highly respected figure among the Afghanistan players. He earned plaudits from all corners for his captaincy and how he managed the dressing room environment.
