Gus Atkinson now has a hundred and a five-for at the Lord’s.

England speedster Gus Atkinson has had a dream start to his test career. He picked 22 wickets in three tests against West Indies and bagged the Player of the Series award in his debut series.

He has followed it up with a century against Sri Lanka to go on the Lord’s batting honour board after being on the bowlers’ honour board already.

On his test debut last month against West Indies at Lord’s, Atkinson picked up a seven-wicket haul and a five-wicket haul. In the 2nd ENG vs SL test at Lord’s, the 26-year-old cracked a terrific century that helped England go past 400 in their first innings.

On day 1, Sri Lanka had won the toss and elected to bowl first. The Lankan bowlers did well to pick up three wickets in the first session before Joe Root carried the side with his majestic century, his 33rd test ton that put him alongside Alastair Cook for the most centuries by an Englishman.

Root formed brief partnerships with others but got significant support from Atkinson, who was 74* at stumps on day 1 after the centurion had departed for 143 with England still 92 runs away from 400.

Atkinson carried on his superb touch on day 2 and played his strokes to reach his maiden test century in 103 balls. He was eventually dismissed for 118 off 115 balls. His knock included 14 fours and four sixes and helped England post 427.

Atkinson became only the sixth player in men’s test cricket to record a 10-wicket match haul and a century at Lord’s.

Following Atkinson’s hundred at the Lord’s, cricket fans across social media hailed the fast bowler for his feat.

Fans hail Gus Atkinson for his terrific century at Lord’s in 2nd test vs Sri Lanka:
