PBKS chased down 262 against KKR to register highest successful run-chase in the history of IPL
In match No. 42 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Punjab Kings (PBKS) chased down a target of 262 runs against the hosts Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the iconic Eden Gardens on April 26. With this win, Punjab scripted history as they broke the record for the highest ever total chased down in IPL and in T20 cricket till now.
After winning the toss and opting to field first, the visitors had an awful night with the ball as KKR openers Phil Salt (75 off 37 balls) and Sunil Narine (71 off 32 balls) hammered a 138-run partnership for the opening wicket, which helped them reach above 260 runs in 20 overs.
While chasing 262, Punjab openers went bonkers against the KKR bowling line-up. Their openers, Jonny Bairstow and Prabhsimran Singh (54 runs off 20 balls), smashed 93/1 in the first six overs. Bairstow registered his fifty in the ninth over of the second innings.
Bairstow and Rille Rossouw (26) stitched a stunning partnership of 85 runs in 39 balls, which helped visitors reach a commanding position in the match. In the 16th over Bairstow completed his hundred off 45 deliveries. This was his first in the ongoing 17th edition of the IPL. Bairstow also registered the joint-second fastest hundred by a PBKS batsman in the IPL.
Towards the end, Bairstow remained unbeaten on 108 runs, while hard-hitter Shashank Singh slammed a crucial 28-ball 68* as the visitors won the match by eight wickets with eight balls to spare.
