Shubman Gill replaced Hardik Pandya as vice-captain of both ODI and T20I sides.

Shubman Gill was the biggest beneficiary when BCCI announced India’s ODI and T20I squads for the Sri Lanka tour as the young batter was named vice-captain of both teams. The Men in Blue will be playing three T20Is and three ODIs on their tour.

Shubman Gill was recently handed the captaincy of the Indian T20I team for the first time on the tour of Zimbabwe and he led India to a 4-1 series win.

While Rohit Sharma returned to captain the ODI side, Suryakumar Yadav was named the T20I captain of India. In a shocking decision, all-rounder Hardik Pandya was removed as vice-captain in both formats, with Shubman Gill taking over.

Hardik Pandya was India’s vice-captain in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 before an ankle injury ended his tournament early. He was then named the vice-captain for the Indian team for the T20 World Cup 2024 and he performed wonderfully, scoring 144 runs and taking 10 wickets.

He also successfully defended the 16 runs in the final against South Africa to make India T20 champions for the second time.

Fans worry for Hardik Pandya and question the merit on which Shubman Gill got vice-captaincy of the T20I team

Shubman Gill has recently been assigned team leadership responsibilities as he is seen as someone who can captain India for a long time. He was named as the skipper of the Gujarat Titans, where he replaced Hardik Pandya and it appears that his leadership satisfied selectors, as he was then awarded a leadership role n in Team India.

Shubman Gill’s selection over Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul as vice-captain in ODIs comes as a surprise. There were reports that if Rohit Sharma is not present, then KL Rahul might lead the team, but those rumors have been dispelled with the squad announcement.

However, fans are most surprised and angered at Shubman Gill getting the vice-captaincy of the Indian T20I team after Suryakumar Yadav was named captain. Surya is being seen as India’s captain for the 2026 T20 World Cup, with Shubman Gill being groomed to take over in future.

However, fans questioned how Shubman fits into the T20I team let alone getting vice-captaincy, especially over the likes of Abhishek Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad.
