Venkatesh Iyer was on fire for Kolkata Knight Riders as he single-handedly propelled the KKR innings.

Venkatesh Iyer was the shining light of Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) innings in their IPL 2023 match against Mumbai Indians (MI) which is being played on April 16, 2023, at the Wankhede Stadium. KKR are placed 5th on the points table with 2 wins in 2 matches, while MI are at 9th with one win in 3 matches.

MI is being captained by Suryakumar Yadav as Rohit Sharma is missing this match due to a stomach bug. For MI, Arjun Tendulkar and Duan Jansen made their IPL debuts.

Cameron Green gave KKR a good start as he removed N Jagadeesan for a duck and then Piyush Chawla accounted for Rahmanullah Gurbaz for 8 runs, while Venkatesh Iyer was rampaging at the other end, hammering the MI bowlers single-handedly.

Iyer then lost captain Nitish Rana as well, who was out for 5 runs to Hrithik Shokeen and shortly thereafter, Shardul Thakur was dismissed by Shokeen as well for just 13 runs.

Venkatesh Iyer's century a lone hand in the impressive KKR final total

On the other hand, Venkatesh Iyer continued to pummel the MI bowlers as he played some astonishingly good shots to both spin and pace. This included an over from Riley Meredith where Iyer smashed him for back-to-back sixes.

He completed the three-figures mark in the 17th over as his century came off 49 balls with him hitting 9 sixes and 5 fours, reaching his first Indian Premier League (IPL) century. This was also his first century in T20 format as well and second century this IPL 2023 season after Harry Brook’s 100* for SRH.

He fell for 104 runs in 51 balls with 9 sixes and 6 fours. He was caught by Duan Jansen off the bowling of Riley Meredith.

Incidentally, this was only the second century in Indian Premier League by a Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) batter. The last batter to make a century for KKR was Brendon McCullum, who smashed 158* against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the very first match of the IPL back in 2008 in Bengaluru.

Twitterverse was all praiseful for Venkatesh Iyer’s brilliant and impressive ton.
