Twitter reacts as MI bowler Akash Madhwal picks 5 wickets conceding just 5 runs against LSG in IPL 2023 Eliminator
Mumbai Indians bowler Akash Madhwal picked 5 wickets conceding just 5 runs in his 3.3 over spell against LSG in the IPL 2023 Eliminator.
On May 24, Wednesday, the Mumbai Indians (MI) faced a battle against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the IPL 2023 Eliminator match at the M Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
In Chennai, Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first. Kumar Karthikeya was replaced in the XI by Hrithik Shokeen.
MI's top scorers were Cameron Green (41) and Suryakumar Yadav (33) while Tilak Varma (26) and Nehal Wadhera (23) advanced the final MI score to 182/8 in 20 overs. For LSG, Naveen Ul Haq grabbed 4/38 and Yash Thakur claimed three wickets.
LSG's batting disintegrated from the start under duress, with Marcus Stoinis (40) the lone bright spot. Other scorers were Kyle Mayers (18) and Deepak Hooda (15), as LSG was dismissed for 101 in 16.3 overs, losing by 81 runs.
Akash Madhwal chose 5/5 as MI booked their travel to Ahmedabad for Qualifier 2 vs Gujarat Titans on May 26.
Akash Madhwal praised by Twitterverse as his 5/5 breaks Jasprit Bumrah’s record of best bowling figures in IPL by a MI bowler
Akash Madhwal was an unknown entity until the IPL 2023 began. The 29-year-old had started playing tennis ball cricket four years ago. When he attended the trials in 2019, he immediately caught the attention of the then Uttarakhand coach Wasim Jaffer and present coach Manish Jha.
Last year, Madhwal joined Mumbai Indians as an injury replacement for Suryakumar Yadav and now he has become Rohit Sharma’s go-to bowler, be it with the new ball or in end overs.
He proved his worth by picking the important wickets of Prerak Mankad, Ayush Badoni, and Nicholas Pooran, who was out for a golden duck.
Madhwal’s 5/5 is now the best bowling figure in IPL history by a MI bowler, as he bested 5/10 by Jasprit Bumrah in IPL 2020. He also equaled the record for least runs conceded for a fifer, set by Anil Kumble, whose 5/5 came against Rajasthan Royals in 2009.
Madhwal’s miserly spell helped his side defend a competitive total of 182 as it made its way to Qualifier 2 against Gujarat Titans.
For this, he was lauded by the cricket fraternity and fans on Twitter.
