Mitchell Santner missed MI’s opening game against KKR in IPL 2026.
Mumbai Indians (MI) have received an important update before their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 match against Delhi Capitals (DC) on Saturday. The five-time champions started their season with a solid win over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium. However, one key overseas player was missing from that match.
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner was not part of the playing XI in that game. His absence forced the team to try a new option in the spin department. Young Afghanistan spinner Allah Ghazanfar made his debut for MI but struggled against KKR’s strong batting lineup.
MI are now preparing for their next match against DC at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on April 4. The team management was waiting for clarity on Santner’s status. His presence could play a big role in improving MI’s balance, especially on a pitch that often supports spin bowlers.
Mitchell Santner joins MI squad ahead of IPL 2026; gives a big boost to Mumbai Indians

In a major boost, Mitchell Santner has now joined the Mumbai Indians squad in Delhi ahead of DC vs MI clash. He arrived on Thursday evening after taking permission to link up with the team later. Though he missed the practice session that night, he is expected to be ready for the upcoming clash.
Santner’s return strengthens MI’s spin attack. In IPL 2025, he picked up 10 wickets in 13 matches and maintained a good economy rate of 7.92. He was also useful with the bat in the lower order. His ability to control runs in the middle overs makes him a key player.
Recently, Santner led New Zealand to the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. He impressed with both bat and ball. He scored 120 runs at a strong strike rate throughout the tournament. He bowled with tight control, keeping his economy under 7.
His arrival also comes at the right time. Ghazanfar had a tough debut, conceding 51 runs without taking a wicket. Santner’s experience could help MI dominate the middle overs against DC.
Meanwhile, there is still no clear update on Will Jacks. The England all-rounder is also yet to join the squad. The team expects him to arrive within a week.
