Usman Khawaja suffered back spasm in the first test in Perth.
The Australian team will miss the 38-year-old opener Usman Khawaja in the second Ashes 2025-26 test at the Gabba in Brisbane. The left-hander was named in the squad for the second test, but the recent developments in ESPNCricinfo suggest he will not be a part of the playing XI.
Khawaja has still not recovered from the back spasms that he experienced in the first test in Perth. Australia won the first test in Perth by 8 wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match test series.
“Khawaja will remain with the team to continue his rehabilitation,” a statement said. “He has not been replaced in the squad.”
Usman Khawaja unavailable for second Ashes 2025-26 test

When the squad for the second test was announced, Usman Khawaja was included, which hinted at his recovery. However, the left-hander will miss out on the second test as he has not returned to full fitness. Khawaja will stay with the squad to continue his recovery.
The left-hander batted in first innings but at four and could not bat in second innings in Perth, causing Australia to try different opening combinations. The second test will also see the Aussies not having Usman Khawaja as one of the options for the opening slot.

Travis Head likely to open for Australia in the second Ashes 2025-26 test

The first test in Perth was a closely contested affair until Travis Head took matters into his hands in the second innings. Chasing a tricky total of 205 in the second innings, Head blew England away out of the game, opening the innings, with his 123-run blitzkrieg off just 83 balls.
As Usman Khawaja sits out in Brisbane, Australia may well provide Travis Head with another opportunity at the top of the order. The left-hander has shown his willingness to open the innings, with fans also expecting the team management to continue with him in the long term.
