VVS Laxman is currently the head of the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.
VVS Laxman was thought of as one of the candidates to take over from Rahul Dravid as India team head coach. However, reports from news outlets have suggested otherwise as it has been stated that the former India batter has shown no interest in applying for the position.
Rahul Dravid’s tenure as India’s head coach will come to an end in June after the completion of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. His actual tenure ended after the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in November, but the BCCI, lacking an alternate, persuaded Dravid and his staff of support staff to extend their contracts for 6-7 months with the T20 World Cup in mind.
Rahul Dravid’s extended tenure, along with batting coach Vikram Rathour and bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, will end in June after the T20 World Cup 2024, and the BCCI has begun the search for the next Indian team head coach.
According to a Sportstar story, Rahul Dravid has informed the BCCI that he will not reapply for the position of Indian team head coach. He had stated in advance that he would not seek any further extensions owing to personal reasons.
VVS Laxman unlikely to apply for the India head coach role
VVS Laxman, the current head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), is also unlikely to compete for the head coach role, according to the article, despite being regarded as a frontrunner. Laxman has been essential in his work at the NCA for the past three years, and he has also served as a stand-in coach for Team India during Dravid’s absence, demonstrating his coaching abilities.
VVs Laxman, who had previously filled in for Dravid to coach the Indian squad that won gold in the Hangzhou Asian Games 2023, would have been an obvious choice.
On Monday night, the BCCI officially announced their search for Dravid’s replacement, outlining the qualifications required and providing a thorough job description for prospective candidates. The deadline to submit an application to the board is May 27.
