West Indies have won and lost a game each in the Super 8 round.

Co-hosts West Indies find themselves in a formidable position with regards to the semi-final race in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 following the win in their second Super 8 round match against the USA.

The Rovman Powell side that had lost to England in their first match of the Super 8 bounced back to seal a thumping win over the USA.

At the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados on Friday night, USA were bowled out for only 128, courtesy of three-wicket hauls from Andre Russell and Roston Chase, who bagged the Man of the Match award for his figures of 3/19.

WI batters made a conscious effort to gun down the target as soon as possible in order to give their net run rate a boost. Shai Hope, who opened in place of the injured Brandon King, blasted 82* off 39 balls. His sizzling knock included eight sixes as the hosts chased the target in only 10.2 overs.

This massive victory took their net run rate to +1.814, which is much better than South Africa’s +0.625 and England’s +0.412.

Talking about Group 2, South Africa are at the top of the standings right now, having defeated USA and England. Behind them are West Indies, with one win and one loss, followed by England, who also have two points in two games. The other co-hosts, USA, are all but out of the semi-final race, having lost both their matches.

The remaining matches in Group 2 are ENG vs USA (match 49) and WI vs SA (match 50), both on Sunday. England are expected to beat USA, and by a margin that will pip their net run rate over South Africa’s. This would mean that the WI vs SA match will be a direct shootout for a semi-final berth.

How can West Indies qualify for the semi-finals?

A win over South Africa will seal West Indies’ place in the semi-finals since their NRR is much better compared to the Proteas. A loss, however, would likely see them bow out of the tournament as England are very likely to beat the USA.

However, if both England and West Indies lose their last Super 8 match, then it will come down to net run rates.
