No IPL participants included as West Indies announce squad for T20I series against South Africa

Rovman Powell is unavailable to lead West Indies as he is with Rajasthan Royals in the ongoing IPL 2024.

West Indies will be led by Brandon King instead of regular T20I captain Rovman Powell in the upcoming three-match T20I series against South Africa at home, as the latter is currently in India with the Rajasthan Royals (RR) for the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Off-spinning all-rounder Roston Chase will serve as King’s deputy for this series.

Along with Powell, the other West Indies stars who have been part of the IPL 2024 season and are going to be part of the playoffs will miss the rubber against the Proteas. This list includes Shimron Hetmyer (Rajasthan Royals), Andre Russell, Sherfane Rutherford (both Kolkata Knight Riders), and Alzarri Joseph (Royal Challengers Bangalore).

The Cricket West Indies (CWI) has allowed rest to Shai Hope (Delhi Capitals) and Nicholas Pooran (Lucknow Super Giants) even though their teams didn’t reach the playoffs of IPL 2024.

However, fast bowler Shamar Joseph, who made a single outing for LSG, has been included in the squad to take on South Africa, and he’s likely to make his T20I debut. Joseph, who was West Indies’ hero in their epic test match victory at the Gabba earlier this year, was already picked in West Indies’ squad for the T20 World Cup despite being uncapped in the shortest format.

West Indies will be hosting Rassie van der Dussen’s team, which is also depleted due to several players being part of the IPL this year, for three T20Is, scheduled for May 23, 25, and 26. All three matches will be played at the Sabina Park in Jamaica.

West Indies are co-hosts for ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in June

This series provides an opportunity for both teams to try out players ahead of the T20 World Cup next month in the West Indies and the USA.

West Indies’ limited-overs head coach Daren Sammy said, “We have not played together as a team since the Australia series, but we just completed a very high-intensity training camp in Antigua. Now we have the chance to integrate some of our players returning from the IPL and build some momentum as a group going into the World Cup.”
