Beau Webster has an experience of 93 First Class matches.
With Mitchell Marsh reporting soreness following his 17 overs in the Perth test – the most he’s bowled in a test match in the last three years – against India, Australia added Tasmania all-rounder Beau Webster to their squad for the second test match in Adelaide, which will be a day-night contest, starting on December 6.
Australia have been pushed back early in the five-match BGT 2024-25 series with a 295-run defeat in Perth. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah starred for India.
The hosts would be looking to bounce back in Adelaide, where they are set to make at least one change if not two. Josh Hazlewood is ruled out due to a side strain and is expected to be replaced by Scott Boland.
With the next three tests coming back-to-back, the hosts might also give rest to Marsh, which would pave the way for a debut for Webster in Adelaide.
Who is Beau Webster?
Beau Webster is a 30-year-old seam-bowling all-rounder from Hobart, Tasmania, with an experience of 93 First Class matches.
Beau Webster first-class and Sheffield Shield records:
Beau Webster has a good First Class (FC) record. In 93 FC matches, he averages 37.83 with the bat and 37.39 with the ball, having scored 5297 runs and picked up 148 wickets. He has 12 FC centuries and 24 fifties to his name and has a tidy economy of 3.45 as a pacer.
Webster made his FC cricket debut in 2014 and has been delivering terrific performances in the last couple of years, which led to his maiden call-up to the test team.
In the last two years in FC cricket, Webster averaged 53 with the bat and 31 with the ball.
Last summer, he became just the second player in the 132-year history of the Sheffield Shield, after West Indies’ Sir Garry Sobers, to score more than 900 runs and take 30 wickets in a season. This summer, he’s scored 448 runs at an average of 56 and snared 16 wickets. This includes scores of 61* and 46* in successful run-chases against India A for Australia A and bowling figures of 3-19 and 3-49 .
In his latest Shield match, Webster scored 61 and 49 against New South Wales and grabbed five wickets to help his side to victory.
“To get a few runs and wickets (for Australia A) was pleasing against a strong Indian side. Any time you’re playing ‘A’ cricket, it’s the one step below Test level, so it does hold you in good stead,” Webster said.
On getting his maiden test call-up, the all-rounder expressed, “To get the call from ‘Bails’ (men’s selection chair George Bailey) at the end of the NSW game was a really proud moment and I can’t wait to get stuck in.”
