Who is Vijayakanth Viyaskanth? All you need to know about SL bowled roped in by SRH for IPL 2024

Vijayakanth Viyaskanth was acquired by SRH for his base price of Rs. 50 lakhs.

On Tuesday, 9th April, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) announced replacement of all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga, who got ruled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 due to heel injury. SRH roped in another Sri Lankan bowler Vijayakanth Viyaskanth for remainder of the tournament.

The development was confirmed by the franchise’s official handle ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) ahead of their crucial clash against Punjab Kings. “Wanindu Hasaranga will be unavailable for the season due to injury. We would like to wish him a speedy recovery. Sri Lankan spinner Vijayakanth Viyaskanth has joined the squad as his replacement for the rest of #IPL2024. Welcome, Viyaskanth,” SRH wrote.

Who is SRH’s new recruit Vijayakanth Viyaskanth?

The 22-year-old Sri Lankan cricketer was born on December 5, 2001. The leg-spinner has played 33 T20s and picked up 42 wickets. In List A cricket, Vijayakanth has so far featured in five games and took two wickets.

In First-Class (FC) cricket, the young lad has played six games and has 16 wickets to his name. Vijayakanth made his international debut for Sri Lanka against Afghanistan in October 2023 at the Hangzhou Asian Games. He is yet to add more caps to his international career.

Viyaskanth has also played for the the Mumbai Indians Emirates in the International League T20 and the Chattogram Challengers in the Bangladesh Premier League apart from Jaffna Kings in Lanka Premier League.

In the ongoing 17th edition of the IPL, Viyaskanth was acquired by Hyderabad for his base price of Rs. 50 lakhs for the remaining tournament.
