Why didn't RCB buy Jasprit Bumrah in 2014? Ex-star reveals reason
Parthiv Patel recommended Jasprit Bumrah to RCB in 2014.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have had several big names in their squad over the years. After an 18-year wait, the franchise finally won its first IPL title in 2025. However, one player they failed to pick in the early years was Jasprit Bumrah, who later became one of the finest fast bowlers in world cricket.
Bumrah made his IPL debut for MI in 2013. He started his career as a young, relatively unknown fast bowler but soon became a key part of the team’s bowling attack.
Mumbai Indians continued to back him and benefited from that decision over the years. Bumrah played a key role in the franchise’s IPL title wins and also became one of India’s most important bowlers across formats.
Former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel has now revealed that he recommended Bumrah to RCB during the 2014 IPL auction. However, the franchise did not act on his suggestion, despite Parthiv’s belief in the young pacer’s ability.

Parthiv, who represented RCB in 2014, recalled the incident during an interview with former India cricketer Aakash Chopra. He said the franchise picked him on the first day of the mega auction.
Parthiv then suggested that RCB look at Bumrah, who also came from Gujarat. Recalling the incident, he said:
“I had recommended Jasprit Bumrah to RCB in 2014.”
He further explained how he suggested the franchise.
“In the 2014 mega auction, I was picked on the first day, around lunch time. When I received a message from them (RCB), I told them, there is a player here, look into him. Perhaps the way I told them wasn’t right,” Parthiv said.
Parthiv revealed that RCB did not believe Bumrah was worth signing at that stage of his career. He also recalled the response he received.
“They didn’t think that he could be worth buying at that stage. That is okay. Reply waisa tha ki, ‘yeh Bumrah-wumrah kya kar lenge’,” he said.
