India are set to clash with England in a three-match ODI series. The opening game is taking place on July 14 at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

The Men in Blue recently lost the five-match T20I series against England 4-0 under new skipper Shreyas Iyer. After the opening game was abandoned due to rain, the hosts outplayed India in the next four games quite easily. Now, Shubman Gill & Co. will aim for a big comeback in the ODI series.

In the ENG vs IND 1st ODI, England captain Harry Brook won the toss and opted to bat first. At the toss, it was revealed that wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan is not part of India’s playing XI. The left-handed batsman played in the previous ODI series against Afghanistan last month.

Notably, Kishan has been overlooked for the encounter. Since KL Rahul is India’s primary wicket-keeper batter currently in the 50-over format, Kishan has no place in the playing XI as of now.

Moreover, India need more all-rounders in the playing XI, and they have opted for players like Washington Sundar, Shivam Dube, and Axar Patel in the clash. Hence, the wicket-keeping duties will be undertaken by Rahul in the 1st ODI against England.

In the ODI series against Afghanistan last month, Kishan made a comeback to the 50-over format after almost three years. The left-handed batter also slammed a century in the second game in Lucknow. Despite his impressive show in the previous campaign, he could not get a spot in the 1st ODI vs England.

After losing the toss, Gill said, “Actually, we’re looking to bowl first. [On India’s preparation after the T20Is] Well, I think most of the boys have been playing the T20s and the rest of the boys we got a bit of rest, I had a bit of training. Got here a couple of days before, so we were practicing. So the environment, the vibe has been really good”.

Revealing the playing XI, he added, “Yeah, very excited for the series, have some really good memories in this venue particularly. So hopefully we’re going to add into that. [On the playing XI] So apart from the usual, we have got four seamers, with Dube and then we’ve got two spinners, Axar and Washi”.

India’s playing XI vs ENG for 1st ODI: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill(c), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul(w), Washington Sundar, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Gurnoor Brar, Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna.
