Will the draw against Sri Lanka affect India's standing in ICC WTC 2025-27 points table?

India secured a draw against Sri Lanka in the second Test in Colombo.

India missed out on a great chance to complete a 2-0 series sweep against Sri Lanka after the second Test in Colombo ended in a draw. The result came despite a massive advantage for India in the first four days. The hosts eventually held on for a draw, with Sonal Dinusha playing a key role in frustrating the Indian bowling attack. Despite this, India finished 1-0 in the series, thanks to their massive 165-run victory in the first Test. 

Though it does not cause a major trouble for India in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27, it will eventually have an impact on their campaign. India remain at fifth position in the WTC points table following the result and now have a PCT of 51.52 with 68 points.

India receive four WTC points from the draw 

Under the WTC rules book, a Test victory is worth 12 points, while a draw earns four points only. India too received just four points following the draw. However, this would be disappointing for India as they had earlier enforced a follow-on after having taken a substantial lead of 213-runs in the first innings. 

The difference is particularly important because the WTC standings are determined by Points Percentage (PCT), rather than only the amount of points accumulated. However, with India having suffered four defeats in the cycle already, every missed opportunity for a victory will cause trouble for India as they still hope to find a spot in the top two positions in the points table. 

Does the draw hurt India’s chances of reaching the WTC final?

This draw would severely impact India’s chances to make it to the ICC WTC 2025-2027 final, but it will not end their hope totally. While Australia have registered a significant victory recently, their chances have further strengthened for a spot in the WTC final. However, this draw means India failed to make the jump to the upper positions in the points table. 

Now with the upcoming series against New Zealand and Australia, India have seven matches left in the current WTC cycle. According to the recent scenario, India need to win at least six of those remaining matches to fancy their qualification chances. 

Therefore, though India’s draw would not affect their campaign initially, it will have a massive impact in the long run. India cannot afford to lose any more matches in this edition of the competition.
