Sunil Narine last played a T20I for West Indies in 2019 and announced retirement in November 2023.

Sunil Narine has been in top form with the ball and surprisingly with the bat as well for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Narine, who has been opening the innings for KKR in this season, at the behest of new mentor Gautam Gambhir, has been on top of his game.

Narine is currently on the third spot of the IPL 2024 Orange Cap leaderboard for most runs. He has 276 runs in six games with one fifty and a splendid century to his name. His runs have come at a strike rate of 187.75 and he has hit 26 fours and 20 sixes.

Narine hit a splendid 109 runs with 13 fours and six sixes, registering his maiden T20 and IPL ton. This achievement came to Narine in his 504th T20 match and helped KKR post 223/6 in 20 overs.

However, Narine’s century was thumped by Jos Buttler’s 107* as RR completed the target with an IPL record chase of 224 with 2 wickets in hand.

Three nights ago, Narine, who had declared his international retirement in November 2023, was convinced he’d be watching the tournament from home. But on Tuesday night, after scoring a superb century to propel the Kolkata Knight Riders to 223 for 6, Narine hinted that his opinion was changing.

“It is what it is, but let’s see what the future holds,” Narine, said after the match when asked if he’d reconsider his decision to retire.

“I’ve been whispering in Narine’s ears”- West Indies captain Rovman Powell

Narine hasn’t played for the West Indies in nearly five years – his last was a T20I against India in August 2019 – and announced his retirement from international cricket in November last year. Meanwhile, West Indies’ T20I captain Rovman Powell, who played an important cameo in RR’s brilliant win, revealed he’d been trying to change Narine’s mind through every channel possible.

“For the last 12 months, I have been whispering in his ears. but he’s blocked out everyone. I’ve asked [Kieron] Pollard, [Dwayne] Bravo, [Nicholas] Pooran. Hopefully, before they select the team, they can crack his code,” Powell said when asked about trying to convince Narine to reverse his decision.

Sunil Narine was part of the West Indies’ T20 World Cup win in 2012.
