Mumbai Indians (MI) move into their next match of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Punjab Kings at the Wankhede with problems they need to fix quickly. The five-time champions started their IPL 2026 campaign with a win against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), but lost the next three games, and that early confidence has disappeared.

Their most recent defeat came against RCB, where Phil Salt’s 78 off 36 and Rajat Patidar’s 53 off 20 helped Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) post 240 for 4. MI fell 18 runs short of the target, despite Sherfane Rutherford’s unbeaten 71.

To make matters worse, Rohit Sharma left the field during that chase with a suspected hamstring injury, making him a major doubt for the game against PBKS. MI are currently sitting in ninth place and now face a side that has won all their games so far.

Will Jacks was reportedly on his way to join the Mumbai Indians squad, but having already missed their first four matches, he looks set to sit out MI vs PBKS game as well. The England all-rounder and fellow signing Mitchell Santner, who has played two games, both requested more time before joining the team in India.

With Rohit Sharma’s fitness now a concern, MI would ideally want Jacks to step in as an opener, but the timing hasn’t worked out. The fans are waiting, the squad is waiting, and Jacks is still travelling from England. He is expected to join team this week.

He hit that ton for RCB against Gujarat Titans in 2024, taking Rashid Khan apart in the process. MI bought him for INR 5.25 crore at the 2025 auction.

Despite the frustration over his IPL arrival, Jacks was in incredible form during the T20 World Cup 2026. He finished the tournament as one of the standout players, scoring 226 runs at an average of 56.50 and a strike rate of 176.56, while also taking nine wickets. These performances earned him a spot in the ICC Team of the Tournament.

Jacks also matched Shane Watson’s 2012 record for the most Player of the Match awards in a single T20 World Cup, finishing with four. When he finally joins the Mumbai Indians this season, he’ll be arriving as one of the most in-form all-rounders in the world, and MI need him sooner rather than later.
