Yudhvir Singh Charak became the first Concussion Substitute in the IPL 2024.

In match No. 54 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the BRSABV Ekana Stadium, the hosts won the toss and opted to field first. Their decision backfired as they had a horrible start with the ball as Kolkata openers Sunil Narine and Phil Salt hammered a 61-run stand before Salt departed for 32 runs in the fourth over.

However, Narine played a blistering innings of 39-ball 81 and was the top scorer for the side. Angkrish Raghuvanshi (32), Andre Russell (12), skipper Shreyas Iyer (23) and Ramandeep Singh (25) also chipped in with the bat as visitors posted a huge total of 235/6 in 20 overs. For LSG, Naveen-ul-Haq scalped three wickets. While, Yash Thakur, Ravi Bishnoi and Yudhvir picked up one wicket each.

Mohsin Khan suffers concussion on field

Lucknow were desperate to take KKR’s Narine wicket as he was hammering bowlers from one end. LSG Skipper KL Rahul brought Ravi Bishnoi into the attack to bowl the 12th over of the first innings.

In the second ball of the over, Devdutt Padikkal made a mess at the long-on boundary. While attempting to take Narine’s catch, Padikkal stepped onto the boundary ropes and went over as well, with the ball in his hand.

However, on the very next ball, Bishnoi bowled a quicker and wider delivery outside the off-stump. Narine once again tried to play the aggressive shot but in the end, he managed to edge the ball towards the third man.

LSG fielder Mohsin Khan, who was standing at third man, attempted to take a really tough chance with one hand, but he failed to grab the ball as he fell down hardly on the ground, hurting his head.

Soon after this, Lucknow’s physio ran towards him and checked him, but the left-arm pacer Mohsin went off the field and never returned during the first innings. Later on, Yudhvir replaced him straightaway in the playing XI and then started bowling for LSG and even took a wicket on the very first ball he bowled. However, this left fans confusing as there was no “Impact Player” signal made by umpire nor shown on TV screens when Yudhvir came in.

The reason behind it is, Yudhvir replaced Mohsin Khan as Concussion Substitute in the game and didn’t come in as an Impact Player.

What is a Concussion Substitute?

As the name suggests, a Concussion Substitute can be used when a player, who is part of the playing XI, gets injured and suffers a concussion in the game. The rule came into effect in August 2019, keeping the players’ safety in mind. The International Cricket Council (ICC) added extra importance to this rule as many cricket viewers can notice team physios run towards the players to check on them whenever they git hit on head.

Who can replace a concussed player?

As per the ICC rules, the teams are only allowed to name like-for-like replacements. For example, if a bowler is ruled out due to a concussion, a side can only bring in a bowler as a substitute and not any other player like a batter or an all-rounder.

How did the first ever IPL 2024 Concussion Substitute Yudhvir Singh Charak perform vs KKR?

During the match against KKR, Yudhvir bowled two overs and picked wicket of young KKR batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi. Yudhvir conceded 24 runs in his two-over spell with an economy of 12.
