July 13, 2024, marks 22nd anniversary of the Indian cricket team winning the historic match against England in the final of the NatWest Trophy 2002.
The NatWest Trophy 2002 was played between three teams – England, India, and Sri Lanka. The hosts of the tri-series were England. The thrilling series saw the grand finale between Nasser Hussain-led England and the Sourav Ganguly-led India at the iconic Lord’s, on July 13, 2002.
With the help of hundreds from opener Marcus Trescothick (109) and skipper Nasser Hussain (115), hosts England powered to a huge total of 325/5 in 50 overs. Chasing 326, Indian batters Virender Sehwag (45) and captain Sourav Ganguly (60) stitched together a crucial partnership of 106 runs for the opening wicket.
However, the hosts bounced back in the middle-overs as they took five wickets, with India reaching 146 runs after the end of the 24 overs after having a solid opening stand.
When things looked to slip away from India’s hands, youngsters Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif put together a match-winning 120-run stand in just 106 deliveries.
Yuvraj smashed crucial 69 runs and got India out of a dangerous situation. After his dismissal in the 42nd over, Kaif added runs with the tail and helped India clinch a thrilling victory by two wickets with three balls remaining.
Kaif remained unbeaten at 87 runs in 75 deliveries, which included six boundaries and two sixes. After winning the high-voltage finale against England, India skipper Ganguly took off his t-shirt and waved it at the Lord’s balcony.
