Two Zimbabwean players have been banned for using recreational drugs.

Days after failing to qualify for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, Zimbabwe Cricket has been dealt with a severe blow. Two of their international cricketers, Wesley Madhevere and Brandon Mavuta have been suspended for alleged violations of anti-doping rules.

The suspension, effective immediately, bans both the players from participating in any cricket activities.

The suspension came as a result of both Madhevere and Mavuta being tested positive for a banned recreational drug during an out-of-competition case recorded in a recent in-house doping test, according to a statement released by Zimbabwe Cricket.

Two Zimbabwean players get banned

Brandon Mavuta has played 26 games across formats for Zimbabwe, showcased his skills most recently on Sunday, December 17, against Ireland. Meanwhile, Wesley Madhevere, a seasoned player with nearly 100 matches for his country, was notably absent from the recently concluded ODI series against Ireland.

“Both tested positive for a banned recreational drug in an out-of-competition case recorded during a recent in-house doping test,” The two players have been charged under the ZC Code of Conduct for players and team officials, marking a significant setback for Zimbabwean cricket team.

The suspension of Madhevere and Mavuta raises questions about the integrity of Zimbabwean cricket setup and its commitment to maintaining a drug-free environment. The use of banned substances not only tarnishes the players’ personal reputations but also casts a shadow over the entire cricketing fraternity.

Anti-doping measures are in place to ensure fair play and the safety of athletes, emphasizing the importance of a level playing field. The alleged breach by Madhevere and Mavuta not only puts their careers in jeopardy but also brings unwanted scrutiny to Zimbabwe Cricket, requiring a swift and thorough investigation to restore confidence in the sport.
