Watch: Mexico star Alexis Vega gets emotional during national anthem ahead of Poland clash
The 24-year-old is making his World Cup debut for El Tri in this edition.
Representing your country in one of the big tournaments is one of the most amazing things a player can do. And sometimes they can't control their emotions when they see fans cheering and the national anthem begins. Alexis Vega was among them, breaking down during Mexico's national song before their FIFA World Cup 2022 opener against Poland in Group C.
Mexico's 24-year-old winger was overcome with emotion as he sang the national anthem ahead of Mexico's goalless draw with Poland. Vega was making his World Cup debut with the national team. He started on the left wing and played 85 minutes in the goalless draw. Vega also had an opportunity to open the scoring but fluffed his chance.
His side, however, returned with a valuable point from the opening clash. That was possible largely due to Guillermo Ochoa's effort between the stick. The 37-year-old pulled out a terrific penalty save off Robert Lewandowski to keep his side in the game.
The draw leaves Mexico in third place in Group C, behind Poland and leaders Saudi Arabia. Argentina, who was tipped favorites to top the group, find themselves at the bottom after a shock defeat to Saudi Arabia in the group opener. Argentina went down 1-2 to Saudi Arabia despite leading after 10 minutes. They also had three goals ruled out to offside.
