Lionel Messi becomes first Argentinean to score at four different World Cup editions
The PSG star scored in his nation's opening game against Saudi Arabia
Argentina’s star footballer Lionel Messi has begun FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar in good goalscoring form. In Argentina’s opening game against Saudi Arabia Messi opened his goal-scoring account with a penalty in the first 10 minutes of the game.
35-year-old Messi made his World Cup debut in Germany in 2006 against Serbia and scored his maiden goal in his 13th minute of arrival in the game. Since then Messi has been considered as power player in football world. Though, he failed to score in 2010 World Cup where Argentina had a poor run and was knocked out of quarter-finals.
After a debacle in 2010, Lionel Messi was in the peak of his career when he entered the arena in 2014 in Brazil. He with his brilliant form and team performance led his team to the finals. In that edition, Messi scored 4 goals. Argentina were favourites to win the championship again in 2018. In Russia Messi failed to consolidate on the momentum and scored just one goal in 4 games. Argentina also crumbled against France in the knockout round. With this goal against Saudi Arabia, he also becames the first Argentinean footballer to score in 4 different editions of the FIFA World Cup.
Before the start of the 2022 edition, Messi hinted about his retirement. Fans are also expecting him to play his top game and finish career on a winning note. Other than championship he also has few records under his radar. With his opening goal against Saudi Arab Messi has also equaled Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal-scoring tally in FIFA World Cup. The goal against Saudi Arab was Messi’s 7th in World Cup, Ronaldo also scored 7 goals in his World Cup career.
