EFL Cup 2022-23: Newcastle United vs Southampton: Predicted lineup, injury news, head-to-head, telecast
The second leg of the EFL Cup are set to be underway
With an advantage of 1-0 after the first leg of their EFL Cup semifinal, Newcastle United will want to seal the deal when Southampton visits St. James' Park on Tuesday. A Joelinton goal gave the Magpies the advantage at the midway stage of the match. Eddie Howe's team is vying to face either Manchester United or Nottingham Forest in the championship game.
Since the season started again after the 2022 World Cup, Eddie Howe's team has been doing well. After the break, they have only lost one of their last eight games across all leagues. Southampton's performance in the Premier League has been terrible, which is why they are at the bottom of the table. However, they can feel good about their progress in both the FA and Carabao Cups.

Players to Watch
Callum Wilson
Even though Callum Wilson hasn't scored since late October, he's the favourite to do so in this match. In light of the player's recent strong play, this game may be his opportunity to establish himself for the club. However, the player has 6 goals and 3 assists in 15 league games.
Sekou Mara
Sekou Mara, the host team's lowest-priced player to begin the scoring, has only scored once in all games this season, but it came in this event. In his final game, an 86-minute stint against Blackpool, he contributed an assist. He seemed to have the power to alter this fixture.
Match Facts
- Southampton is trying to become the third team to reach a League Cup final despite losing the first leg at home, including Stoke City vs West Ham in 1971-72 and Arsenal vs Spurs in 1986-87.
- Newcastle United's longest home shutout streak is eight games.
- Nathan Jones joined Southampton after Luton was ousted from the League Cup in the first round.
- Joelinton is the first Newcastle player since Shola Ameobi in September 2010 to score in three consecutive League Cup matches.
Injury and Team News
For Tuesday's second leg, Howe should only be missing Jonjo Shelvey, Emil Krafth, and Matt Targett. As a result, Howe may stick with the same starting XI, although Isak's part in Joelinton's winner last week gives him hope of making the lineup.
Callum Wilson went nine games without a goal, but Howe has conceded that Isak still has to build up his match fitness in training, so another spectacular sub-outing may await the Swede here.
Southampton center-back Caleta-Car was sent off in the first leg for two yellow cardnewcass, but the Croatian served his ban in the FA Cup at the weekend and may play on Tuesday. Before Caleta-ejection, Moussa Djenepo was clattered by Nick Pope and forced to leave before halftime. It's unclear if the attacker can recover from concussion procedures in time to play. Juan Larios, Valentino Livramento, and Alex McCarthy also miss.
Enlisted James Bree will be eligible to make his debut on Tuesday. Still, Jones should stick to the formula that worked in the first leg while Gavin Bazunu, Mohammed Salisu, Carlos Alcaraz, and skipper James Ward-Prowse prepare for recalls.

Predicted Lineup
Newcastle United predicted lineup:Pope; Trippier, Schar, Botman, Burn; Willock, Longstaff, Guimaraes; Almiron, Wilson, Joelinton
Southampton predicted lineup:Bazunu; Walker-Peters, Lyanco, Salisu, Perraud; Alcaraz, Diallo; Edozie, Ward-Prowse, Orsic; Mara
Match Prediction
Jones's team is by no means out of it with just a one-goal disadvantage to make up against a Newcastle team that is rarely merciless in front of goal, but trying to assault the Magpies' staunch defence can be a pointless endeavor.
With Howe's team having a whole weekend of rest and preparation, we can only expect the hosts to post another win, another clean sheet, and a spot in the EFL Cup final. Being forced to go for goals would leave Southampton open to lightning-quick Newcastle counterattacks.
Prediction: Newcastle United 1-0 Southampton
