Top three biggest halftime leads in Premier League history
Three teams share this accolade in the English top flight
Since the Premier League's inception in the 1992–93 season, these games have had the greatest scoring totals and largest victory margins. 9-0 is the largest win margin ever, and it has occurred four times. The first was Manchester United's victory over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on March 4, 1995. But who has scored the most goals at halftime? Let's look at the top three biggest halftime leads in Premier League history:
Manchester City 5-0 Watford (2019)
Manchester City completed a remarkable season by thrashing Watford at Wembley to secure an unprecedented domestic triple. But there was even more to this overwhelming victory.
By thrashing Watford to finish third in Pep Guardiola's first season, Manchester City guaranteed their spot in the Champions League for the next season. City dominated Watford from the get-go, creating space with ease and converting their opportunities against the helpless Hornets, who were missing six recognisable centre-backs due to either injury or punishment.
Southampton 0-5 Leicester (2019)
As 10-man Southampton was destroyed at a rain-soaked St Mary's, Leicester City tied the record for the largest-ever Premier League victory, which had stood for 24 years.
On Friday, October 25, 2019, Southampton and Leicester City played in the 2019–20 Premier League at St. Mary's Stadium in Southampton. The 9-0 victory for Leicester matched Manchester United's 9-0 triumph against Ipswich Town in 1995 as the biggest triumph in the competition's history. The outcome also established an all-new record for the largest away victory in English top-flight sports history.
Newcastle 5-0 Tottenham (2023)
On their way to a 6-1 romp at a rocking St James' Park on Sunday, Newcastle United destroyed Premier League top-four foe Tottenham Hotspur with a five-goal blitz in the opening 21 minutes.
Newcastle set a Premier League record for the largest halftime advantage thanks to its 5-0 demolition in only 20 minutes. It tied the previous mark established by Leicester in their illustrious 9-0 victory over Southampton.
As fifth-placed Tottenham crumbled like a house of games of cards, a game that was regarded as a key six-pointer in the fight to seal Champions League qualifying was essentially finished before the clock had hit 10 minutes.
