Erik Ten Hag's Red Devils hunt for Europa League Semi-Finals spot with much awaited Sevillistas hurdle ahead

Manchester United will be aiming to make significant progress towards the semi-finals of the Europa League by hosting Sevilla. Erik ten Hag's team has already secured the Carabao Cup, and have an upcoming FA Cup semi-final clash later this month against Brighton. The team are now seeking to add to their collection of trophies by taking on Sevilla in the first leg of their quarter-final matchup at Old Trafford.

Manchester United have managed to regain their footing with victories over Brentford and Everton, following a somewhat turbulent period. As they prepare to face a struggling Sevilla side, United are considered to be the clear favourites to extend their winning streak.

Sevilla has experienced a challenging domestic campaign, which has resulted in Jos Luis Mendilibar becoming their third manager of the season. The previous two, Julen Lopetegui and Jorge Sampaoli, have already departed. Sevilla currently finds themselves in 13th place in LaLiga and are only five points ahead of the relegation zone.

Kickoff:

Thursday, April 13th; 8:30 PM BST

Friday, April 14th; 12:30 AM IST

Manchester United Form In All Competitions: W-W-L-W-W

Sevilla Form In All Competitions: D-W-L-L-W

Players to Watch

Manchester United: Casemiro

The Brazilian midfielder has been Erik Ten Hag's biggest signing this season and there is no doubt that Casemiro's addition has done wonders for the Red Devils. The player is accustomed to the style of play presented by the Spanish side and will be eyeing his chances.

Sevilla: Yasine Bounou

Yasine Bounou is going to be the player to watch out for when it comes to Sevilla, albeit for the wrong reasons. The goalkeeper has conceded 14 goals in his last 5 outings and will need to be on his 'A Game' if the away team hope to remain in the game. If Bounou fails to step up to the occasion, Sevilla could be far away from a positive result even before the game reaches the second leg.

Match facts

  • Manchester United are yet to beat Sevilla in European competition, with the Red Devils suffering defeat twice against their Spanish opponents.
  • Sevilla in 6 out of their 8 encounters against English clubs have progressed ahead in knockout stages of European competition losing only to Leicester City and West Ham United.
  • Manchester United become the second side after Leeds United to face four teams from the same country in one edition of an European competition.
  • Sevilla have been winless in their last 11 away outings when it comes to European competitions.

Players and injury news for Manchester United vs Sevilla

Marcus Rashford is expected to miss the match against Sevilla due to a groin problem, while Luke Shaw is also doubtful with a hamstring issue. Donny van de Beek, Tom Heaton, and Alejandro Garnacho remain sidelined.

On a positive note, Casemiro is available for selection, having served his domestic suspension, and Anthony Martial may replace Rashford as the centre-forward. Scott McTominay is likely to keep his place in midfield after an impressive display against Everton, while Christian Eriksen made his comeback from an ankle injury in the same match.

Sevilla will have Lucas Ocampos back in their squad after he was suspended during their previous league game. However, Joan Jordan and Jesus Manuel Corona are injured, and Pape Cheikh is ineligible.

Alex Telles, who is on loan from Man United, is available to play against his parent club. Youssef En-Nesyri, with 14 goals this season, is expected to lead the line for Sevilla. Marcos Acuna, who was previously suspended in domestic competition remains available available for European competition and is likely to play at left-back ahead of Telles if needed.

Prediction for Manchester United vs Sevilla

Manchester United have not displayed their best performance since the international break. The absence of Rashford would be a significant setback for the team against Sevilla.

Nevertheless, it has been more than seven months since Ten Hag's squad has lost a match at Old Trafford. While Sevilla have an impressive record in this competition, their poor results in LaLiga imply that they might not be able to meet the challenge.

Prediction: Manchester United 3-1 Sevilla
