Does Paulo Dybala have a release clause in his AS Roma contract?
The 29-year-old has rediscovered his touch under Jose Mourinho.
Paulo Dybala, the Argentine forward who joined AS Roma on a free contract last summer, has two release clauses in his current contract, which could see him leave the club for a surprisingly low fee of £11 million.
Dybala has been a key player for Roma under the leadership of Jose Mourinho, having played 34 games in all competitions this season and scoring 16 goals, including 11 league goals.
However, Dybala's current contract stipulates that he can be signed by another Italian club for £18 million, but Roma has the option to activate his salary raise from £3.7 million to £5 million, effectively cancelling the release clause.
The player can also be signed by foreign clubs, including teams in the Premier League, for just £11 million, but in this case, Dybala would have the final say.
What is Paulo Dybala's situation?
Dybala's situation is unique, but he is not the only player with double-release clauses. Erling Haaland, the former Borussia Dortmund forward, also has two different release clauses in his contract with Manchester City.
In a recent interview, Dybala praised his experience at Roma and hailed Mourinho. He spoke about the warmth he received from the people and his desire to contribute to the team's success in the city. Dybala also discussed the possibility of wearing Roma's number 10 shirt, which is traditionally associated with Francesco Totti, the club's legendary captain.
"The people here are incredible. From day one they made me feel this incredible warmth," he said. "When Tiago Pinto contacted us and the possibility of coming to Rome arose, I said to myself 'I have to do something in this city'.
"The shirt number? Roma’s number 10 will always be Francesco Totti. At Juventus, the club asked me to wear the 10 and it was a huge pleasure. Never say never, obviously that would be a unique responsibility.
"Jose Mourinho has an image and an important influence due to everything he represents in the world of football. He would be a good chess player."
Despite Dybala's positive comments, the double release clauses in his contract have sparked speculation about his future at Roma. It remains to be seen whether he will leave the club and which teams would be interested in signing him.
Dybala's situation highlights the importance of contract negotiations and the impact of release clauses in modern football. As clubs seek to protect their assets and players strive for greater flexibility, double-release clauses could become more common in future contract negotiations.
