Top five EFL Championship teams with most points in single season
The mark of 100 points has been breached a few times in the history of the league.
A humorous category is the all-time greatest championship teams. They are by nature transient since they are heading towards the promised Premier League riches. There cannot be periods of domination or a belief that their achievements will continue in the top division.
The Norwich City team of a few years ago was acclaimed by some as the best the Championship has ever seen. But will they make the list of the top five EFL Championship teams with the most points in a single season? Let's take a look here:
5. Fulham (2000-01) - 101pts
With a crushing title victory, Fulham secured their place in the first flight for the first time since the 1960s. They celebrated Christmas by pulling away from second place by 10 points (with a game left) and Easter by clinching promotion with five games left. The team is owned by Mohamed Al-Fayed and is led by Jean Tigana.
After being promoted, Fulham spent like a team owned by the owner of Harrods: £35 million in transfer fees in one summer at the time was a significant figure. It worked, unlike that other season.
4. Leicester City (2013-14) - 102pts
Nigel Pearson's Leicester City team breached the 100-point barrier that year, finishing with 102 points. This was the beginning of the team's extraordinary surge that finally saw them win the Premier League and go to the Champions League knockout stages.
David Nugent finished the season with 22 goals, propelling Leicester back to contention in the Premier League as the Foxes won 31 league games. It marked the second-tier club's eighth triumph.
3. Newcastle United (2009-10) - 102pts
The 2008–09 Newcastle United team may not have been too excellent to be demoted, but the team that was sent down dominated the Championship as the Magpies went undefeated at home to secure an instant promotion to the Premier League. The Magpies won 30 games while only losing four as they blasted back into the Premier League.
Players like ace scorer Andy Carroll and midfield general Kevin Nolan were in charge of the Toon Army. Despite Mike Ashley's lack of support in the transfer window, manager Chris Hughton was able to retain the majority of the team from the previous season together.
2. Sunderland (1998-99) - 105pts
Admirably, the League Cup semi-finalists from the 1998–1999 season found the time to set a massive new record for points in the second division. Sunderland lost only three games and let up an incredibly meagre 28 goals in their 46 games during the season that introduced English fans to Thomas Sorensen, who would go on to play approximately 200 appearances on these shores.
1. Reading (2005-06) - 106pts
The Championship championship was won by the record-breaking Reading FC in 2005–06 with 106 points, the highest ever scored by an EFL team.
The Royals made good signings, adding Leroy Lita and Stephen Hunt to the likes of Kevin Doyle and Shane Long.
Reading's manager Steve Coppell guided Reading to their inaugural top-flight campaign, winning 99 goals overall and losing just one of their 46 games. They twice scored five goals against Millwall, Brighton, Derby, and Cardiff while maintaining tight control as Steve Sidwell and James Harper guarded a solid defence.
