Will Cristiano Ronaldo get a medal if Manchester United win Europa League?
The Portuguese superstar left Old Trafford in November last year
The return of Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United did not go as planned. After an argument with boss Erik ten Hag, the Portugal star's second stint at Old Trafford was cut short before the 2022 World Cup. Even though he had done well in the past with the Red Devils, Ronaldo found it hard to fit in with a team that had found its flow without him.
In the short time that Ronaldo was back with the club, he played in six Europa League games and scored two goals. Even though he left United, he won't be playing in the competition anymore, but the club could still give him a winner's medal if they want to.
UEFA doesn't have strict rules about how winners' medals should be given out, but each club only gets 40 medals to give to their players and staff. Those who weren't at the final might not get an award.
Ronaldo has had a lot of success in his career. He has won the Champions League five times, but he has not yet won the Europa League. Even though it wasn't a prize he actively tried to win, he could still get a medal if United wins.
The Europa League and the FA Cup are alike in that the winning club gets 40 medals to give out. Jurgen Klopp, the boss of Liverpool, asked for more medals when the Reds won the FA Cup in 2022, but it's not clear if he got what he asked for.
Even though Ronaldo's second time at Manchester United wasn't very good, he could still get a medal for winning the Europa League if the club wants to give him one. Both UEFA and the FA Cup have similar rules about how medals are given out. Winning teams get 40 medals to give to their players and staff.
However, Manchester United played Sevilla on April 14. Both teams battled to a 2-2 tie. Manchester United fought hard but struggled to defend at home. United's Sabitzer Marcel scored twice in the 20th and 14th minutes, putting Sevilla down. Sevilla fought and scored in the 90+2 minute when Harry Maguire deflected an own goal. United conceded two own goals, including one in the 84th minute by Tyrell Malacia, leaving the score at 2-2. Manchester United and Sevilla showed their brilliance and determination in this battle, leaving fans excited for their next meeting on Thursday.
