2022 FIFA World Cup full fixtures, schedule, timing and telecast details
The tournament started with the host nation Qatar losing against Ecuador.
The countdown is on to a global showpiece in Qatar, with 32 nations ready to start chasing down the grandest prize in international football. The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 will be played from 20 November to 18 December in Qatar. It is the 22nd edition of the competition, and the first played in the Arab world. 32 teams are in action for the most coveted prize in international football, with the final scheduled to take place on December 18 at the Lusail stadium, the biggest one among the eight stadiums being used to host the World Cup.
Teams and Groups
The 32 teams are divided into eight groups each. The top two teams from each group will move on into the knockout stages where the Round of 16, Quater Final, Semi Final and Final will take place. For the first time, the World Cup is taking place in the winter and the first time in an Arab country .
Group A
Group A at the 2022 World Cup contains three-time losing finalists the Netherlands, reigning AFCON winners Senegal and hosts Qatar alongside South American qualifiers Ecuador. The host nation will be looking to qualify for the knockout stages for the first time, whereas the Netherlands will be favourites to top the group. The AFCON champions will definitely look to go through the group stages but they will face a tough fight against the host and Ecuador.
Group B
Group B at the 2022 World Cup contains one of the favourites, England, alongside fellow home nation Wales, the United States and Iran. The Euro 2020 finalists England are not only considered to be the favourites to go into the knockout stage but they are also favourites to become the world champions. Wales have made it to the World Cup after a long wait of 64 years having last featured in the tournament back in 1958. They will be one of the dark horses in the World Cup. USA and Iran should not be underestimated as they have some quality players who can create some major upsets.
Group C
In a group where Argentina are the only team in the top 10 in FIFA’s last rankings before the FIFA World Cup kicks off in November, Mexico, Poland and Saudi Arabia will also be vying for a ticket to the round of 16. After a successful Asian qualifying campaign, Saudi Arabia will be expecting their team not just to make up the numbers. They shouldn't be underestimated after beating Japan, Australia, and China at home. Having qualified for seven World Cups in a row, Mexico is a familiar face at the tournament, alongside Argentina they will be favourites to go into the knockout stages. Poland will look to create a good challenge for other teams in the group as their star player Robert Lewandoski will like to take his team ahead.
Group D
In Group D of the Qatar 2022 World Cup we have the reigning world champions, France. The team coached by Deschamps is one of the favourites to lift the trophy of world champions again, The Danish team managed to beat France in the UEFA Nations League group match, winning both games, so they hope to repeat this feat in the world’s top soccer competition. The group is completed by Australia and Tunisia, who are fully confident that either France or Denmark will stumble to have a chance of qualifying for the round of 16.
Group E
Every World Cup needs a Group of Death. In 2022, Group E is indeed that group, containing four-time winners Germany and 2010 champions Spain, alongside an underrated Japan side and CONCACAF qualifiers Costa Rica, who have previous of escaping tricky groups. Germany under the new manager Hansi Flick will look to go into the knockout stage as they will look to become 5-time world champions. Spain is having a lot of young talents as well as some good experienced players and they are one of the favourites to win, whereas Costa Rica and Japan can create upsets as they have their teams in good form and are dark horses for the world cup.
Group F
This group will feature two great teams that are used to being a part of international soccer’s big party, namely Belgium and Croatia. This group also features a team that starts to have more participation in events like Morocco; moreover, we’ll also have Canada, which will be making its first appearance in the World Cup after several decades of absence. Surely Belgium and Croatia will be the favourites to go through the group stages but Morocco and Canada will also give their best to outperform them and will give them a tough fight.
Group G
Group G at World Cup 2022 features the favourites for the title Brazil, who headline a competitive group of nations including European representatives Switzerland and Serbia alongside African giants Cameroon. Brazil will be able to secure the top spot but between the other three teams, it will be a tricky battle to secure the second spot.
Group H
The group consists of two-time champions Uruguay, World Cup regulars South Korea, one of Africa’s most historic performers Ghana and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal. Portugal is the favourite to win Group H or at least qualify for the Round of 16 along with Uruguay. South Korea’s chances of finishing in the top two are quite slim. Ghana will look to give a tough challenge to Uruguay and South Korea for second place.
Venues
The group games will take place across eight stadiums: Al Bayt Stadium, Khalifa International Stadium, Al Thumama Stadium, Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, Lusail Stadium, Ras Abu Aboud Stadium, Education City Stadium, Al Janoub Stadium.
