Ratings: Tie-breaker drama seals ATK Mohun Bagan's fate in AFC Cup Playoffs
The Mariners earnt a continental berth after a tough game against the Nizams.
ATK Mohun Bagan booked a place in the AFC Preliminary Round playoffs with a 1-1 (3-1) win over Hyderabad FC at the EMS Corporation Stadium, Kozhikode on Wednesday. Dimitri Petratos put his side in the lead at the 20th minute before Hyderabad equalized in the 44th minute through Joel Chianese.
Neither of the teams were able to score after that and that forced another penalty shootout between these teams after the ISL semi-final. Like that time, the Mariners reigned supreme to ensure they finished their last game before transitioning to Mohun Bagan Super Giants with a win and keeping their AFC Cup dreams alive.
Hyderabad FC
Anuj Kumar – 7.0
Anuj wasn’t able to do anything about the opener, but made a few nice saves afterwards. Composed in thwarting ATKMB’s set-piece threat too. Made a great save in the penalty shoout, but not helped by his teammates.
Reagan Singh – 7.0
Regan was quite sturdy at the back, ensuring Ashique didn’t get too much space to run into. Maintained a solid defensive line and neutralized the threat through his side.
Chinglensana Singh – 6.0
Singh lost his temper at times, leading to unforced errors and seeing him booked too. Had a shaky first half, but did well after that.
Odei Onaindia – 6.5
Onaindia maintained a pretty solid backline for the Nawabs, ensuring that the Mariners didn’t get much space in his box. Made some vital clearances and moved the ball forward well. Blasted his penalty over.
Akash Mishra – 6.0
The left-back was full of energy in the left and was constantly with his forward runs, making the most sprints for any player. Outwitted by Manvir for the goal, but mostly solid defensively and created a few chances too.
Borja Herrera – 7.5
Borja made some clever runs into the box and passes the ball around well, creating chaos inside the ATKMB backline. Set up Chianese’s striker with a smart spot in the box.
Sahil Tavora – 6.0
Tavora was an energetic figure in midfield, helping recover possession with some smart tackles. Also moved the ball forward well and got in promising areas to split open ATKMB’s line. Skied a horrible penalty into the stands, undoing a lot of his good work.
Joao Victor – 6.5
Victor maintained impressive energy through 120 minutes and dictated Hyderabad’s moves from deep. Spread the ball around really well and helped his backline with some nice defensive work. Slotted the first penalty in the shootout into the goal.
Mohammad Yasir – 7.5
Yasir was an absolute livewire in the attack, making smart runs through the right and often moving inwards to cause chaos. Set up multiple chances with his brilliant delivery, linked-up moves impressively and struck the post in the second half.
Joel Chianese – 6.5
Chianese got himself in the best areas in the box and benefitted from that with his smart finish for the equalizer. He got at the end of some more chances, but his finishing wasn’t clinical enough to double the lead. Then put his penalty wide in the shootout!
Aaren D’Silva – 6.0
D’Silva was a menace with his clever dribbles and elasticity, getting in some promising areas. Set up some nice stuff, but nothing too dangerous.
Substitutes
Abdul Rabeeh – 6.0
Rabeeh added more pace to his side, making some great runs through the right wing – but lacked a final product.
Halicharan Narzary – 5.0
Narzary gave more width to his side and opened up more options. Made a dismal dive to try and earn a penalty before extra-time.
Nim Dorjee Tamang – 6.0
Tamang did a pretty solid job after replacing Reagan, keeping up with Liston and not letting him dictate things.
Rohit Danu – N/A
ATK Mohun Bagan
Vishal Kaith – 6.5
Kaith was a bit shaky with handling crosses, but made some nice saves. Didn't really have to do much in the penalty shootout, as Hyderabad's players slotted their attempts off-target.
Lalrinliana Hnamte – 4.0
Replacing Asish Rai, Hnamte was tormented throughout the game. He was repeatedly ousted by the Hyderabad players and the Nawabs targeted his weaknesses to cause trouble. Added little attacking threat.
Pritam Kotal – 6.5
The ATK Mohun Bagan captain was quite sturdy, keeping a close eye on Chianese and making some vital clearances to avert trouble.
Brendan Hamill – 5.5
Hamill played his first game in a lengthy period and struggled to cope with some of Hyderabad’s attacks. Left wrong-footed on occasions and taken off in the second half.
Subhashish Bose – 6.0
Bose was occasionally caught out of position at the back and could’ve done better to block Chianese’s goal. Improved as the game went on.
Carl McHugh – 6.0
The Irishman was composed in midfield, helping protect the backline well and ensuring Hyderabad didn’t create much through the central areas. Moved the ball around well. Saw his penalty saved.
Glan Martins – 6.0
Martins used his energy to maintain a sturdy midfield line and win back possession inside his box. A bit too aggressive at times that left him fooled, but added decent defensive protection.
Manvir Singh – 6.5
Manvir was full of energy on the right, constantly making runs to open things up. Cleverly held up Mishra and allowed Boumous to dribble into the box for his goal.
Hugo Boumous – 7.0
Got booked early on but recovered well after it. Made a brilliant run through the right wing to smartly set up the opener. Moved around well with the ball, but ran out of steam in the second half.
Ashique Kuruniyan – 5.5
Ashique made a few nice surging runs through the left, but wasn’t able to really test the keeper or create major chances.
Dimitri Petratos – 7.0
Petratos was in the right place at the right time to smartly slot in his goal. Unable to get any more major chances after that, but created opportunities with his smart delivery. Took his penalty well.
Substitutes
Slavko Damjanovic – 6.5
Damjanovic added more reliability to the ATKMB backline, making key clearances to fend away Hyderabad’s attacks after coming on.
Liston Colaco – 5.0
Colaco tried his best to create chances and made some exciting runs, but his delivery wasn’t to the point. Had a huge chance to score in extra time, but poked a chip over the bar. Made up somewhat by converting his penalty.
Federico Gallego – 6.5
Gallego tried hard to get a second for ATKMB and moved around cleverly inside Hyderabad’s box. Had a few nice attempts go wide and set up some nice chances, including Liston’s late on.
Kiyan Nassiri – 6.0
Nassiri tried to create problems with his movement through the right, but was unable to set up anything major. Converted his penalty to win the game for his side.
