Goa Pro League 2023-24: Format, Fixtures, Standings and more
Goa Pro League began on the 27th of this month.
The stage is all set for the 26th edition of the Goa Pro League as we step into another exciting season of top flight league football in Goa.
A total of 13 sides will be competing in this edition of the tournament. A number of changes have been made since the last season.
First, instead of fielding two U-20 players, Goa Pro League clubs will now feature two U-21 players who must collectively play a full 90 minutes. Also, players accumulating five yellow cards will serve a one-match suspension, with subsequent yellow card counts leading to progressively reduced suspensions.
With that said, let us now take a brief look at everything you need to know about the 2023-24 Goa Pro League.
Teams
Calangute Association
SESA FA
Panjim Footballers
Guardian Angel SC
Vasco SC
Pax of Nagoa SC
Young Boys of Tonca
Cortalim Villagers
Geno Sports Club
Format
All 13 teams have been placed into a league table, where they will play against every other club on a home and away basis. Once all the games are played, the table toppers will be crowned champions, and the lowest team will be relegated to GFA First Division.
It must be noted that Corporate entry clubs (Pax Of Nagoa SC and Geno Sports club) are exempt from relegation for the first season, ensuring a minimum of two years in the top tier.
Teams will be ranked according to points (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss), and if tied on points, the following tiebreaking criteria are applied, in the order given, to determine the rankings.
- Points in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
- Goal difference in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
- Goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
- If more than two teams are tied, and after applying all head-to-head criteria above, a subset of teams are still tied, all head-to-head criteria above are reapplied exclusively to this subset of teams;
- Goal difference in all group matches;
- Goals scored in all group matches;
- Penalty shoot-out if only two teams are tied and they met in the last round of the group;
- Disciplinary points (yellow card = 1 point, red card as a result of two yellow cards = 3 points, direct red card = 3 points, yellow card followed by direct red card = 4 points);
- Drawing of lots.
Venue
The first two rounds of the Goa Pro League season will be played at the Duler Stadium and the other venues which will host GPL 2023 are Ella Ground, Old Goa; Rosary Ground, Navelim; and Nagoa Ground, Verna.
