Looking back at top three moments from Mohun Bagan Super Giant's win over Machhindra FC in AFC Cup
Anwar Ali struck twice, as Mohun Bagan Super Giant claimed a convincing victory
Mohun Bagan Super Giant are through to the next round of qualifiers, in their 2023-23 AFC Cup Journey. The Mariners defeated Nepal’s Machhindra FC by a full-time scoreline of 3-1, in a pretty entertaining game.
The tie also saw a better connection between the Mohun Bagan players – something that was missing in their derby game last week- and overall, a number of positives as well as key insights were drawn.
While a number of incredible moments grace tonight’s game at the salt lake, we’ve compiled a list of the top three of them. So let’s have a look at it.
3. Oloumou’s free kick golazo
It was the 77th minute of the game, and the alarm clocks were ringing for Nepalese outfit Machhindra FC, as they found themselves two goals down. The team in white and blue had to turn up the heat, and so they did.
Machhindra were awarded a free kick right outside Mohun Bagan’s penalty box, and Cameroonian linchpin Messouke Oloumou had his eyes set on the goal.
Olomou made a sweet connection with the football and gave it the perfect touch to make it swerve past the wall, as well as the keeper, to give his side a lifeline, and shatter Kaith’s hopes of a clean sheet.
2. Anwar Ali’s opener
Mohun Bagan had been imposing their dominance in the game from the very start, but all their chances were going in vain, as they failed to strike the ball into the back of the net. Frustration seemed to grow in the Mohun Bagan players, as the first half was drawing to an end, and it became increasingly important that the Red and Green brigade went into the tunnel with a lead at halftime.
The situation was delicate, and the fans were desperate but up stepped Mohun Bagan’s star signing Anwar Ali, who leapt high to meet Boumous’ looming corner kick and headed the ball perfectly into the back of the net.
1. Cummings’ first goal for Mohun Bagan Super Giant
Mohun Bagan’s game against Machhindra was rendered more special for the faithful Mariners, as it marked the arrival of their mainstay signing of the season, and arguably the most lethal striker in the ISL, Jason Cummings.
The Aussie scored his maiden goal for the club against Machhindra, to give his side a comfortable 2-0 lead. Fellow Australian Dimitri Petratos was the one who provided the pass to break the defence and leave Jason with just the goalie to beat, which he did excellently by going past the keeper and slotting it home, to open his account for the Mariners.
