Brazil fail to reach knockout stage of Women's World Cup 2023 after draw against Jamaica
Brazil were one of favourites to win the World Cup
In just their second FIFA Women’s World Cup, a valiant Jamaica withstood Brazil to a 0-0 draw to go to the playoff round for the inaugural time while handing the South Americans their earlier departure since 1995.
The Reggae Girlz scarcely attempted to score, but they played tight defence in a frantic environment at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium as they needed a point to advance.
Marta was given her sixth World Cup start by Brazil manager Pia Sundhage, but the legendary attacker bowed out in defeat.
From the beginning, her touch was absent. In the fourth minute, she sent a shot past a defender. Seven minutes later, she lost another opportunity with a clumsy contact, putting an unguarded Ary Borges furious at the far post.
Luana’s cross gave Borges, who had been running into the goal, an opportunity to score, but in the 24th minute, the playmaker misdirected her header.

Later in the half, Borges set Tamires up with a fantastic cross through the inside-left channel, but Tamires sent a volley right at goalie Becky Spencer.
As Canarinhas became more desperate after the interval, as their attempts were ineffective as Jamaica played their fortunes to halftime.
The defender, Allyson Swaby, narrowly placed the ball in the back of the net in the 79th minute, forcing Spencer into a superb stop at the back post. The Jamaicans’ hearts were in their mouths.
The following match will probably be between Colombia and Lorne Donaldson’s unbeaten team.
In a different group match, Kadidiatou Diani scored three goals in the first minute to startle Panama and help France advance to the Women’s World Cup’s round of 16 with a 6-3 victory.
France and Jamaica advanced to the last 16, while As Canarinhas and Panama were eliminated from the competition.
