Manchester United have entered the final phase of making a decision on Mason Greenwood’s return. It is being reported that players and staff at Old Trafford, including manager Erik ten Hag are rooting for the forward to return to football. Whether he makes a return directly to the Man United first team, or spends the coming 23-24 season out on loan, remains to be seen.

Mason Greenwood was arrested in January 2022, on charges of rape and sexual assault. Following his arrest, he was suspended from Manchester United and his sponsorship with Nike was put on hold and eventually rescinded, he has since remained missing in action. Fast forward to February 2023 when all allegations against him were dropped. Since then, how he will return to the game remains a much-discussed topic.

After his initial suspension, Manchester United opened an investigation to determine how to deal with Greenwood’s situation. After allegations against him were put aside by the court, discussions arose around the fact that whether he would continue to play for Manchester United or would be loaned out for the coming season.

Recent statements from big names at Old Trafford, including from manager Erik Ten Hag  have suggested that he might return to the Man United first team sooner than expected

A source from Sunfootball has said quoted that.

“Mason is working harder than ever on the training pitch. He’s desperate to return to the side as soon as possible and wants to put the last 18 months behind him.” The source further stated.

“Talks about his future are in the final phase, and the players and the manager are behind him. The only thing that remains to be decided is whether he returns to first-team action or goes out on a season-long loan.”

It will be interesting to see how Ten Hag will employ Mason Greenwood after investing in Rasmus Hojlund and Mason Mount in this transfer window.
